I keep getting "public network" notification, even after disabling

Hi! I live in NYC and when I ride the subway, at every station that has WiFi (which is most of them on my line) I get a beep and a vibrate, telling me about the public network.

I went to Settings -> WiFi -> menu -> Advanced -> Network Notification, and turned it off... but that didn't help. Also, I cannot figure out if I can just make this notification be more quiet. Any ideas?

PS - the notification isn't even all that clever, it often beeps only when the train is leaving the station...

If you manage your networks and forget the transit ones, it won't prompt you to sign in to them. To my knowledge, that's the only way to get that to stop. I think the setting you changed only applies to unsecured networks within range.

+1

That's my thought too.
