I lost a lot of files and want to recover them

Ok so, today, I decided to backup my pictures so I just took my phone, a Oneplus One, and connected it as a camera (PTP) and copy/pasted my dcim folder. Sadly, when it started, my computer kinda bugged and i had to click cancel on the transfer. Next thing i know, everything in my internal storage is gone. This was my first try at backuping my pictures, as I though google drive did it automatically, but I forgot to actually turn the option on on drive so right now, i just lost 6 months worth of pictures, including pictures of my last trip so I am really sad/mad right now. Since the oneplus one does not have a removable storage and the only options to access the storage are MTP and PTP so I cannot run any recovery software for window and since the device was not rooted, every app i tried (things like wondershare Dr. fone) dont work. Is there any way to like, root the device without loosing anything so that i could run thoses apps or do any of you know an other solution to this problem?

Welcome to Android Central! Unfortunately, rooting the device means writing onto memory, which means you'd probably not be able to recover at least some of the photos. See this guide: http://forums.androidcentral.com/am...-s/500142-guide-recovering-deleted-files.html

In the future, set the phone to connect via MTP, and use Windows Explorer to explore the device. Drag and drop the photo files (not the folder itself) from /DCIM/Camera to the computer's hard drive.

Re: I lost a lot of files and want to recover them

File recovery utilities such as Recuva intended for Windows files are worthless on iOS or Android mobile devices. There are some apps like DiskDigger, Easeus, Android Recovery, etc that could possibly help. However, they require rooting the phone. Also, the more the phone has been used since deleting files, the poorer the chances of recovery. That's because the chances of the old data - which is actually still there, not erased, but more like marked for deletion - being overwritten increase with use. Then the data really is gone. And rooting itself might overwrite your lost data.

Anyway, if the data has not been overwritten and if you're willing to root the phone and if you're willing to buy the software, then maybe you can recover some of the files.

From now on, remember - backups, backups, backups!
