I made myself a car dock. (Pictures up)

Being the broke college of engineering student that I am, I didn't want to pay for a dock that I could make myself.
So I found some thin sheet aluminum, and went to work.
So far I've made the actual dock for the phone to sit into and I've made the individual parts necessary for the 360 degree pivot. At the moment, I am locked out of my parents house, so no pictures and it isn't complete yet, but I will update when I finish.
So far I've spent $5 on felt for padding, and $2 on screws nuts and bolts for the pivot. If anyone wants more details, I can tell how I did it.

Pictures are up. More pictures on a lower post. The zip is a docx of a template I used. I modified my dock after the template was made, but it is pretty accurate.

I'd like to see a finished product. And even some pictures of the build throughout.

I had a cheapy car window mount that I used for my BB Storm so I just used it.

Some of the people on the forums are into making their own desktop docks but I don't think I've seen anyone make their own car dock.

How do you plan to mount the dock to the car?

Admirable that you are trying to build one yourself, but for 19.95 you can just buy one. Your in for 7 bucks already.

Ok, its finished.
Sorry, still no pictures yet.
To the question of how I'm mounting it, when I bought my truck, the previous owner had one of those clips that had a round piece that slide into it already in the there, and I never took it out. so I just found a bolt and a rubber washer that fit snug, and voila.
pictures will be posted tonight, I swear.

Props for making your own, personally I'm waiting on ProClip to get a holder out for the DI so I can get a hold of it.

I'll say something - I've been viewing these forums for a while, as I will be getting an inc when VZW says I can....but I finally signed up just so I can see the pics, as they were hidden for me (so you pushed me to finally sign up - so good for you) But it looks good and sturdy. But personally I think it could use an outer layer of 'sleekness' especially around the back part. I mean if you want to go cheap- just tape it up with some black tape- im sure you can get some good matierals for cheap

But officially my stance is

Good Job! not being a sucker to the accessory industry and doing something for yourself! I am a big fan of people who like to take intiative and do things themselves.

i think it looks pretty cool, i think personally it would look sweet if you got some kind of rubber or foam though on the front. It might make it look alittle sleeker that the material you have on there right now. I give you props man! forget anyone that says you could have just bought one, i get satisfaction out of doing it myself!

Looks pretty good for a first run attempt. I'd run it for awhile, good on ya man!

Thanks guys. That's just white felt by the way.

I think I'm gonna have to redo it because I've worked the aluminum so much its getting brittle in a few of the bends. It's holding up pretty well though.

it only cost $7 to make? that's pretty good. i'd rather have one to make (seems fun to make too) then spend triple the money on a generic one. props to you

The pics look good, the mount looks good. Great job and creative use of the mount that was already in the truck. For me, I prefer my phone to be a little higher up, and closer to my windshield so I don't have to look down to see my map.

But great job with the design, it's nothing like I thought it would look like.

It's always fun making your own accessories. I have 2 desktop docks that I made myself.

i think you did a good job. the only thing i would do now is paint it black or a dark gray to blend into your dash board. it must of been fun to make.

Great job dude!..def. better than anything that I could make! Way to use your intuition and not just buy a generic one when you could save the money! Looks sweet!
