I need help in NOT getting the Gingerbread OTA update.

After reading some of the gripes people are having with the .596 update, I even more so, want to stay on Froyo until I decide I want the Gingerbread OTA. I have my phone working EXACTLY like I want it right now.

I am rooted (Z4root) & have used Titanium Backup to uninstall (after saving backups) some bloatware (Skype, VZ Navigator, & City ID) that I don't use. I thought that would prevent me from getting the OTA notification but it keeps getting pushed to my phone.

I don't want it to automatically start downloading & install if I don't tap "Later" before the counter expires. What do I need to do?

I want to wait for .596 until there is an easy root method obtained (like the Z4root or Gingerbreak apk's) because I don't want to go without my root apps for any amount of time. Most important being "Adfree Android" & "Wireless Tether".

And before anyone gets preachy about free wireless tethering vs. paid, let me explain that I have absolutely NO INTEREST in abusing it, but I feel that $20/mo is a ripoff for the very occasional downloading of a book to my Nook Color or file that I need to send for work from my laptop when I am away from any WiFi hotspot. I need to have the option available for my own peace of mind.

I also don't really want to go with the whole flashing the pre-rooted .596 with the D2 Bootstrapper just to keep root. I would rather just stay on Froyo.

Not recommended but you could remove SystemUpdater.apk from /system/app. From terminal (with ADB)

Code
adb pull /system/app/SystemUpdater.apk C:/Path/to/your/desktop //Backup the file (just in case) (IF needed) adb remount //Remount the system partition to read-write adb shell rm /system/app/SystemUpdater.apk //Remove the apk

Be warned, this will permanently disable system updates, until you push SystemUpdater back to /system/app

Thanks for the reply, but is there another possible solution? I have always been leery of doing mods like that for fear of messing things up.

I wish they didn't make it so you have to jump through hoops to NOT get an update!

You could freeze the file with Titanium Backup.
This is exactly what I did, In my post last night I mentioned that I "froze"
The updater, and so far so good. I have not received the update. I am still running on froyo, smooth as silk!!

Which file "Updater 2.2.1"?

Since I don't have Titanium Pro, would backing it up & then uninstalling it do the same thing? Then if I ever want it back on to get the OTA, I just reinstall the app+data, right?

Yes, "Updater 2.2.1". I cannot answer your question regarding deleting it, because I do not know. Why not just purchase TB? It comes in handy!!!

I am leary of deleting files, so freezing comes in handy.

I have considered it, but never had an interest in flashing ROMs so I knew I wouldn't use it to it's full potential. Also, bloatware never bothered me because we have so much storage space. I also hide it from the app drawer with LauncherPro.

You guys don't know what your missing. Gb is the best update android has come out with. My stock phone us running the best it ever has. It's like a new phone.

I've never had an issue with Froyo. It's plenty fast for my uses & I don't want to lose my root apps. I use LauncherPro so even the new Blur doesn't interest me.

Honestly, the only thing that does is the dark notification bar but that is just a cosmetic preference. I don't really think Gingerbread brings anything necessary like Froyo did with enabling flash, not to mention that a lot of apps still don't play nice with Gingerbread since not many phones have been updated to it.

As an alternative, why don't you try and delete some of the "bloatware" instead, much safer than deleting the updater file. This would achieve the same result, since deleting any bloat would cause the Gingerbread update to fail.

***You don't want to be like the guy on "Lost" who kept having to reset the doomsday button!

Edit: Just thought of this as well, There is an app called "Bloatware Freezer" for .99

I did delete some (VZ Navigator, Skype, & City ID) but still got the update notification. The update would have failed, but I didn't even want it to download.

Deleting it worked! I haven't gotten the notification since I removed it. I even tried pulling the OTA & nothing happened. Success! It doesn't appear to have affected anything else either.

Thanks Rocky. I have no desire to be Desmond from "Lost" so I won't delete the backup. Haha!
