I need something similar to FaceTime

I have a note 3 and my wife and kids all have apple iPhone's. Up until the note 3 we all have owned every iPhone that came out. We were apple- aholics and now that I have switched and they see it was the best move I've ever made in the mobile phone life they are considering switching as well.... Our issue is that until they do switch we would like to be able to do FaceTime together. It's a item we all used on a daily basis with each other. We also have several other family members and numerous friends who own iPhone's and we FaceTime chatted with all of them frequently.....

So for the time being that I am the only smart mobile user of the bunch, how can I FaceTime with not only my family and friends but other iPhone users?

I figured since my phone was rooted it would be an easy fix to be able to FaceTime with an iPhone user but I'm not finding any easy solutions or any solutions for that matter....

I am assuming I would have download an app and the person I want to FaceTime with would have to own the same app? If that truly is the only way to accommodate being able to FaceTime with an iPhone user then what apps are the best to use for that?

Thanks in advance for your help.... I truly love everything about the note3 and all its perks and advantages but I really do miss the FaceTime perk for Apple iPhone.

Also, while I have y'all here and got your attention.... Last question is if I have a unlimited data and texting plan why would I need to use something like the "go sms" app? I was told by another note3 user that my first app should be the go sms app and it would make my texting life so much easier. I have the app and it is awesome but what are the main uses of having it as opposed to the stock texting app? Is it just the ability to customize it to your liking or is there something else out there that I am missing with that app?

Thanks again.

You won't be able to use Facetime at all. You would all have to use Hangouts or another video chat program like Skype. As for the Go SMS app, it's not a must have. It was simply that person's SMS app of choice. I use Hangouts for all my messaging and it works just fine.

There's no app that works with Facetime. You'd all need to have a third party app that offers videos calls. Hangouts and Skype are pretty good.

So you y'all were going to try and stick with just one messaging app and you wanted to be able to make and receive video calls you would use hangouts? I'm assuming my family would be able to install hangouts on their iPhone's as well? Or is hangouts not compatible with iOS? If iPhone can use hangouts is there any issues with hangouts and the Apple software? I know if Apple had their way no one would ever use anything other than what comes installed on their phones or what was designed specifically for Apple.

I just don't want to force my wife and kids to download something that they will have fits with if Apple has made it tough to use on their system.

Hangouts works fine on iPhones. Some people even think the iOS version is better than the Android one. They should have no problem video calling with you. The only thing you might notice is that the video quality isn't as good, but it's worth a try.

Use Google Hangouts. I use that on my Note 3 if anyone wants to do that face time thing from either Android or an iPhone.

You'll have better luck getting help if you start your own thread in the appropriate forum (help and how to) instead of asking your question in a thread only loosely related to your issue in a subfoum that sees relatively little traffic.

Facetime protocol is owned by Apple so I doubt we'll ever see an Android app that can interface with it. It's the same with iMessage. A developer would have to prove that he invented the protocol completely independently, and Apple would still sue. So unless the Koch brothers wanted to financially support an independent Facetime-protocol app, I don't think it'll happen.

As far as unlimited data, texting isn't data, it's voice (as far as charges go, because it uses the same network that voice does). MMS OTOH (sending pictures in texting) is data. That just texts a link to the picture which is being stored on the carrier's server, and downloading the picture is data usage. And as others have said, while Go SMS is nice, and so is Handcent (and Hangouts does SMS now, I think), they're no more "necessary" than strawberry ice cream is. Eat it if that's your preference, but if you prefer chocolate, that works fine too.

Someone beat me to the Tango suggestion. But yeah Tango and Hangouts are what I've used.

I have an iphone 5 and the video on Google Hangouts is really inferior to Facetime. Maybe Tango would work better...
