I never get OTA Updates on my Nexus 9 Tablet

I got my N9 LTE in late 2014 and it never gets updates OTA. During the Christmas/New years holiday I struggled to update it to Marshmallow manually, and now I am still not getting anything OTA. As of right now it is stuck on the December 1, 2015 security patch.

On this week's podcast, for another Nexus Jerry or someone recommended taking out the SIM card and trying to check for updates over wifi only. Tried that, but nothing.

Could it be the Straight Talk SIM (on AT&T's network)? Should I go with a "real" AT&T or TMo card or does that not matter?

Welcome to Android Central! Did you get the tablet directly from a carrier? I know that Nexus devices in general aren't carrier specific, but there have been exceptions (like the Nexus 6). Not sure about the 9.

Thanks for the reply. It came from the Google play store.

I know this doesn't answer your question directly, but you can always manually update the tablet: How to manually update your Nexus | Android Central.

Interestingly, the most recent factory image available for the Nexus 9 is MMB29X, while the Nexus 6P is up to MHC19Q. The last MMB factory image for the 6P was 2 versions ago. I wonder if this means there hasn't been an official factory image update for the N9 for the past couple of cycles. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#volantisg

EDIT: Never mind--from what I was reading, MMB29X should be the April patch for the N9.

Thank you.

I know I could go that route but I really struggled with it when I did the manual update to marshmallow. I couldn't get it to work on my Macbook Air and wound up using my sister's Windows laptop.

Plus it seems like I shouldn't have to.
