so I rooted it. that's it. I copied the file and I have super user premisions. irk what any of that did but what now. how do I take advantage of this? how do I just go to app brain now and install directly from there? what else do I have to do. everyone told me to root but it seems exactly the same. so what do I do now? I don't want to tether BTW. I only have 200mbs.

is it supposed to be faster or something? and what foes the superuser permissions app do?

Basically, it gives you access to the entire file system on the phone so you can do what you like to it.

There are some things you can do to make the phone faster. Search around for lag fixes, they will make the phone quite a bit faster. Please be sure you know what you are doing before you start poking around too much. Although its rather hard to brick the phone completely, its still possible and really sucks to lose all your data and whatnot.

It does boost the speed up...but I can't wait to see Froyo on our phones....non beta version, final version.

Then I have to unroot this phone...

Grab OneClickLagFix....it really speeds up the phone...A GOOD amount. The battery will be draining a bit more.

well, to me its more value than hype. got rid of all at&t bloatware. enabled sideloading apps. enabled full android market access. full customization ability. installed wireless tethering. i have done more, but those alone makes rooting worth it.

From the xda forum - the riskiest thing to do is to flash an i9000 rom onto the captivate. That seems to be the most likely to brick the phone, AoN

So just curious, when you say "brick the phone" does that mean I can NEVER use the phone again, or does it mean I need to reinstall a bunch of stuff to get it working again.

When I upgraded the OS on my BlackBerry, it would brick occasionally (notice how I blame the phone, not me) :-)

But I could still reinstall the OS and get it working again. Just curious if that's the same for Android or not.

It's the same as your Blackberry, only difference is it is possible to permanently brick an Android phone (never heard of this happening with a BB). But as long as you have a backup in Clockwork you should be safe from most any bricking situation.
