I think Nexus One is not a phone, but an OS

I mean if you think about it, most of the focus has been on the features of this "Google phone" but not much on the phone itself. Yeah there have been some things here or there, but most of it has been the features. And nearly ALL of the features tie in EXACTLY with the leaks that we see for Android 2.1

So, for my 2 cents, I think this "Nexus One" is either just an OS (or a secret secret codename for Android 2.1), or just a phone that they are testing Android 2.1 on. I mean, honestly it looks no different at all from the other HTC phones.. just the buttons rearranged on the bottom.

Its not out yet so one can't go about saying that its like every other HTC phone especially when the other HTC phones have been mediocre compared to the passion.

Interesting article, but as some other commenter said in another thread in this specific forum, google could be using the Nexus One trademark name as a sort of standard that phone manufacturer's would need to achieve in order to receive the Nexus One trademark. This would allow google to have high end and low end Android phones without competing with the other phone manufacturers. The other makers would still receive the latest Android OS's but their devices would have to meet certain criteria if they wished to be Nexus One certified

I find that more plausible. A Nexus One for every carrier that agrees with/meets Google's specifications and gets updated directly from Google without any interference from the carrier much like the iPhone. Hopefully it will be the same phone across the board.

Frankly as a consumer I would welcome this knowing that I'll pay a little more for the phone doesn't really bother my that much. I'd sure like the ability to remove the carrier apps that for now are on the phone without choice. That's the about the only thing I miss from RIM, the ability to remove unwanted carrier apps from my device.

If it is a certification class, do you think some phones will be Nexus One certified ex post facto?
For instance, do you think the droid will classify? I don't see why not.

It's possible. Rumor is Google had their hands in the development of the Droid, heavily had their hands in the development. Who knows, it really is a game of wait and see.

I think its certainly plausible that some released phones could be Nexus One certified but in my opinion, the only one that deserves it is the Droid. Having been a MyTouch owner, I know firsthand that phone doesn't deserve it but I can't comment about the others.
Now if this "Nexus One certified" thing is really true then the phone we see all over the internet at the moment could be the debut phone for the Nexus One designation.
I also think that its interesting to note that Tmobile just recently added a no contract plan (Even More Plus) with options for unlimited data access which would fit nicely what the bloggers are saying is Google's plan to sell it unlocked and unsubsidized so that Google will have complete control over the phone ala Apple. This would also explain why Tmobile is getting the first crack at it, because as the smallest carrier of the big four, they would be most likely to let Google have that amount of control. This also explains why Verizon denied Google because we know that Verizon seldom likes to give up control as in the case of the Storm 1

I mean, it looks the exact same and practically has all of the exact same (leaked) stats of the HTC Passion.

I wouldn't be surprised if all of this was just to hype up a new OS or to hype up the Passion

It's important to note that the vast majority of times the HTC code names for phones in development do not make it to the market. HTC Passion is the code name....we know that HTC and Google have a close Android relationship. A lot of people would argue that HTC is right now the de facto standard in smartphone hardware and have been for sometime. The past two developers phones have been HTC devices.

Well it is probably just the HTC Passion but the Nexus One might come in as a sort of variant of the Android OS. If there are multiple "levels" of Android then Google and the phone manufacturers would be able to create high end (Nexus One) and low end Android phones such as the MyTouch.
