I updated my OnePlus 5 to Android 8.0 recently and apps just crash unexpectedly or freeze altogether

I didn't know whether to put this in the "Android 8.0" forum or the "OnePlus 5/5T forum", but I've recently experienced apps either crashing or freezing altogether after updating to the newest version of Android. I usually see a slew of apps pop up with the "so and so stopped working" prompt unexpectedly, but the two I can think of right now is Marvel's Contest of Champion and Fate/Grand Order. The crashing prompt will pop up whenever I'm using the phone with other apps or if I've just barely turned the phone on from being off. (This could be due to the newest version of Android just having been officially released to the OnePlus 5 or the apps that I currently use just haven't been updated to support it.) I also had a moment where OnePlus's camera app froze on a picture I was trying to take. It wasn't a full freeze since I was able to back out of the camera and exit to the home screen. I also used Snapchat at one point and my phone unexpectedly turned off while using it. Although this could also be because my phone was about to die anyways. I was able to turn my phone back on and it still had 5% battery left from 15%.

I've heard that people have used the "Recovery & Backup" method in settings or clearing the system cache which the second choice just sounds like a lot of steps to go through just to get to it. I don't know if either option will fix the issues I'm currently having and so that's why I decided to come here and ask. The only other thing I can think of doing is asking the customer support at OnePlus. I haven't really had an issue with getting help from them. I don't know if they'd be able to tell me anything different though.

Any and all help is appreciated! Thanks. :)

Clearing the cache is no problem. Easy to do. Takes just a few minutes.

1. Turn the phone off.
2. Hold Power and Volume Down
3. English (or pick any language that you want)
4. Wipe data & cache
5. Wipe cache
6. Yes
7. Reboot

Sounds simple enough.

Does "Step 4" mean that you'll be clearing all data on the phone? Apps, pictures, etc. I have Google Photos and most game saves should be in the cloud or connected to Facebook so that's not really an issue for me. I'm just curious. If that's the case though it might just mean taking some time to redownload all these apps again which might take some time.

Second question: When you're in this mode is the touchscreen still useable or do you have to use the volume buttons to choose an option? It's my first time using it and I just want to make sure.

Thanks for the quick response!

EDIT: Just thought of something. Do you need to backup all the data and stuff first before trying this method?

No. All your pics and data remain intact.

No pro let. Hope it works for you. Please post back the results.

It's been about a day and here are the results. I noticed a prompt pop up for Fate/Grand Order the moment I had rebooted after clearing the cache yesterday. I thought that it'd be a one off but it seems to still be showing a couple "so and so app has crashed" boxes the moment I turn on my phone from having been shut down. These prompts don't appear while I'm using the app thankfully (at least when it isn't having an actual problem causing the app to crash or freeze) so I don't really think that it's anything to worry about. It's just more of an annoyance than anything else to see those prompts appear the moment I turn my phone on. I just didn't have an issue like this until I had updated my OnePlus 5 to Android Oreo. I also took a photo using the phone's camera app and a couple more using Snapchat and I didn't run into any of the same issues like I did before. So I guess that's something.

Well there's some improvement but we want perfection. I would contact through Twitter the OnePlus Help. Maybe they can give some better help.

That's a good suggestion but I usually just use the Customer Support on OnePlus's website. They haven't really failed me except for the one time I had to switch from using the messaging app from OnePlus to another app called Textra just to be able to group message with people. I'll have to try contacting them later.

Thanks for all the help!

EDIT: I contacted customer support on their website and was told to do a hard reset. I did the hard reset and the prompts are still appearing. I guess I'll just have to live with it.

I'm sorry that after a hard reset, these app stop prompts are still happening. This could be a glitch with the update - perhaps ensuing updates will fix things. Of course, it's not fun waiting for that to happen. Please keep us posted if the prompts stop or get worse!

Are you setting up as new afterwards it setup as new?

Wow! Sorry for the late reply. I had no clue that people were still posting in this thread.

I have no clue what you're asking me here. Unless you're asking if when I hard reset my phone that I cleared it of everything and didn't choose to install the backup data. If that's the case then I'd have to say no since I used whatever backup data Google had on hand. I'm not exactly interested in doing another hard reset though because I already lost saved game data on a couple of games.

Most mobile games I've played in the past save the data to the cloud, Facebook or Google Play but I guess not these couple since they want you to set up a one time account with a code if you ever end up transferring devices. I also can't get my old accounts back easily without knowing all this information that I had no clue about previously that they want.

EDIT: Although I could have also set it up "as new" and still downloaded all of the backup data that Google had on file. I forget if that's possible but if it is that's probably what I did.

I have the same issue and it's happening on an increasing number of apps. makes me think it's with app updates.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue but at the same time I wish you also didn't have it.

I don't remember if I've seen any more of these prompts today but it's also been awhile since I last first turned my phone on. I just tried replicating the same process a few minutes ago by powering off my phone but that didn't do anything since I guess the prompts only appear when I've had my phone off for some time and it retrieves all of the notifications that I haven't looked at since it was last on.

I'll have to check it again later whenever I end up charging it. I'll make sure to leave an edit or a new post in this thread if I see any more.

EDIT: I had another prompt for Fire Emblem Heroes pop up a few moments after I turned my phone on. It's usually only one or two prompts that pop up but they're still annoying to see when I haven't been using the app.

I updated out of the box and then installed apps zero issues

Glad to hear it! Although it also sounds like you went through a different process than I did.

This may happened due to dirty flash. Go to recovery and perform WIPE Cache.

If possible, try to factory reset you phone from OnePlus Stock recovery. You can also perform a clean flash via Custom recovery like TWRP. This guide may help you: https://droidfeats.com/update-oneplus-5-to-android-8-1-oreo-oxygenos-open-beta-6-official-firmware/

Whenever OnePlus rolls a new update, I suggest you to WIPE Cache before and after updating the phone.

Thank you for the suggestion but that seems like a lot of work just to try and fix something that may or may not help my situation. Possibly even make it worse. The app prompts are an annoyance to be sure, but it's not like they're constantly hindering me from using said apps. One or two of them just pop up unexpectedly when I first turn my phone on and then usually go away for the rest of the day unless an actual app crash occurs. I'm still able to fully use my phone and these apps so it's just an annoyance and not a serious issue.

Like I said before: I'm not exactly interested in doing another hard reset or factory reset because I already lost saved game data on a couple of games.

Most mobile games I've played in the past save the data to the cloud, Facebook or Google Play but I guess not these couple since they want you to set up a one time account with a code if you ever end up transferring devices. However, I will take and use your advice on wiping the phone's cache before and after OnePlus has released a new update from now on. I've already tried it before but it might help to do it more often. I would imagine that my OnePlus 5 has an official release of Android 8.0 and if that's not the case and it still is in Beta (like in the link above) that causes even more concern. Although that also might explain why I'm experiencing these issues.

I'll just live with whatever is wrong since I now feel like it isn't a major inconvenience to me. Thanks for the suggestion once again! Thanks to everybody else who helped and suggested things as well.
