Ok, so I am ready to root pretty much but I have just a few questions.

The main reason for me to root is so I can use a USB OTG to get more storage. I mainly have some questions about this piece of hardware primarily because I have never used one.

1. Are these $1 cords on amazon the real deal? Are they that cheap?
2. Is a USB OTG as easy as plugging it in to my N7 & to my 160gb flashdrive or is there more to it?
3. Do I leave the USB OTG plugged in at all times or can I just have like my music/movies on it & plug it in when I am in the mood to use that stuff (Music & Movies are where most of my memory goes, otherwise 8gb would be enough for me)

Also, is there anyone willing to maybe skype with me (Chat, no voice or video) as I unlock/root my N7. I am really nervous about doing this and I feel a lot more comfortable when I have a higher knowledge at my fingertips. I preferably need someone who is intelligent in this subject and knows what they are talking about. Thanks :D

Try Wugs toolkit, it's just like having one of us there. :)

Sent from my Nexus 7 using Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2

Its a nexus. Its so easy you don't need your hand held :)

Wugs is super easy. Manually is super easy. And the tab is practically unbrickable.

You have PC or Mac?

I am on PC. Does it matter which method I use? I was looking at Wugs

No it doesn't matter, just that wugs only works on PC.
If you agent confident in following directions or do t feel like it, wugs is automated and will do the steps for you.

You have win7 ?

I also recommend the toolkit developed by mskip over at XDA. I am used to rooting the old fashioned way and could not believe how easy he made it.

1) Yes. you can even make your own. Check this thread for configurations that are known to work and some trouble shooting help. Also try this and this.

2) Once configured, yes. You need to root, install stickmount, install a file/directory explorer and thats about it. After that, you can simply plug in your device, mount it and go on your way. when your done, you unmount it and can unplug it. Surprisingly easy once you do it.

3) That is up to you. Many people have specificaly purchased USB-OTG adapters/cables and microSD cards or small USB drives for this exact reason. My cable and my 1TB WD passport drive are a little bulky to leave in at all times. However the 6 inch cable with a thumb drive isn't bad when on a plain, etc. If I wanted it for daily use, I would look into a smaller setup. maybe using this and this with a 64G SDCard.
