I was playing around with it in store

And noticed that one of the Folds on display had a blob in the center of the display, the Best Buy in Midtown Manhattan on 5th Ave. They had both silver and black on display. The silver one had the blob. I also noticed lots of scratches when looking at the screen in the light.

For those with the Fold, do you have scratches that you can only see in light?

Nope and I haven't changed one thing in terms of how i treat my phones. Its be held, folded, poked and prodded by many. Not a scratch on her. I do still get nervous because of all of the bad press. But in all honesty its not as fragile as they made it out to be.

No doubt folks are purposefully scratching them to see if the negative comments are true.

Seems like display units tend to get some serious abuse. :(
(Lets not forget vids & stories of folks purposely trying to see if they could damage phone xyz because of some article or video watched on YT)

Cheers,
BR

That may be, but it would only support the claims that it's fragile. Doesn't mean the phone isn't worth buying at all, but it does reinforce the need to be careful with it.

Also the scratches don't necessarily explain the blob. Was it similar to the one mentioned in this article? https://techcrunch.com/2019/09/26/my-galaxy-fold-display-is-damaged-after-a-day/

LOL. Ok, let me rephrase...

Purposefully going out of their way to far above and beyond abuse the phone, in ways they'd NEVER consider doing even to an adamantium/diamond/vibranium hybrid phone, JUST to damage it and say "See... look how delicate it is !!"

I'm not saying it's not delicate... I'm saying judging by a demo unit in the store is not a valid determining test.

I do believe it's delicate, I have no intention of buying 1st Gen tech... but I apply that to everything in life, including car purchases... I just think folks are now looking for things to bash on it.

I love the concept and where the tech is going, the gadget geek in me wants one, but I stick by my personal mantra of don't buy 1st gen tech.

I was just thinking of an analogy with nice dress shoes. I like going to Nordstrom Rack and checking out the nice leather Italian dress shoes on sale there. Sometimes I see some on display that are totally scratched up, pretty obviously on purpose. This wouldn't make me not want to buy shoes like that -- but it would make me pretty careful when wearing them!:p

Has anyone thought about using a soft flexible screen protector on their fold? I ordered one. Waiting for it to arrive

I played with the Fold at a Best Buy store. I gave it my usual pocket test to see how well it fits in my front trouser pocket. I felt a noticeable thud, or was it ka-plunk? It's definitely weighty. A bit too much of a weighty bulge in my front trouser. I also found out the Fold doesn't have any memory card slot. Seriously? A device this thick doesn't have a memory card slot? I find that............unacceptable.

100% agree on the no SD card slot. It's not that you need it, it should just be there, specially at that price.

Although the Fold that I checked out has 512GB of internal storage, I don't like the idea that all my trivial pics and videos are eating up my internal drive. Plus I don't like...wait, I meant can't stand, no, I meant I really freakin' hate having to copy and paste all my favorite music/video/files from one device to another. That's why I like simply swapping out my existing memory card from an old device to a new one. Simple and done. I've never had a smartphone in the past 10+ years that didn't have a memory card slot...yet. Geez, that's part of the reason I got the Note 10 PLUS over the regular Note 10 just to have a memory card slot. Anyone seen the current price of a fast Sandisk 256GB MicroSD card nowadays? It's only a cheap $40 on sale at Best Buy. I have one right now in my Note 10+.
