I've never used the Google launcher, so I'm not sure how it operates. However, I would imagine that it operates like a lot of Android things operate. So, I would suggest going to the screen you want the counter widget, then press and hold on that screen w/o touching any other apps or widgets. After the long press you generally get some options open up for you, one of which I'm guessing will be the ability to add a widget. If so, select the add widget option and find the widget in the widget/app tray where it will likely take you upon choosing to add a widget.
Also, if when you press the general App tray button at the bottom of your screen, if you see a widget tab at the top you should be able to select that tab. Then you can search for the widget there. Long press the widget and your home screens will likely pop up. Then just drag it to the home screen you want to place it on. This is probably the quicker alternative if it works. Hope one of these methods work for you.
