I'd really like to run CyanogenMod on my E4GT, but...

In the past I've been really happy with CM7.2 on my old device, which was the much more limited LG Optimus S, with the exception of the difficulty I had with Google Calendar. And that was just as likely due to something I did rather than the ROM itself.

On the E4GT I don't have to worry nearly as much about system resources, but even so there were a number of features about CM that I liked and I would like to use whatever CM is appropriate for ICS on this device. I'm running rooted stock ICS, I've installed a custom recovery, and I have a Nandroid backup. I'm ready to roll. Over in the Optimus forums, the instructions for ensuring that you have the right model and build number before attempting to wipe and flash were laid out in excruciating detail--excruciating but necessary, I think. By contrast, in the E4GT forums I'm seeing mostly just links to other websites which, themselves, don't really provide the kind of detailed instructions I got used to in the Optimus forums. My difficulty in deciding whether to pull the trigger mostly comes down to:

  1. Nothing in this subforum indicates that CM9 is stable--the best I see is beta. I'd consider upgrading to Jellybean and using CM10, but I have the same issue there.
  2. GB had different "flavors" and builds on the Optimus, e.g. MVJ, MVD, ZVD, etc. and I had to make sure I was starting from exactly the right model and build before flashing any ROM. Is this no longer an issue with ICS and later versions of Android, or with the E4GT, or with both?

One thing I like about CM is that it supports 270-degree display rotation; it's nice to be able to hold the phone upside down so the ear bud cord can hang straight down from the "bottom" and still get a "right side up" screen display. I almost always need the earbud cord when using the phone; it's my normal way of making and receiving calls. If there's another custom ROM that'll do this, or a way to get it done in ICS, please let me know.

As I've given up my landline I can afford the minor glitch or two along the way, but there's no way I can afford a bricking experience because I depend on my phone too much for that. I also need to avoid any major functional faults, e.g. GPS not working.

Well I would start off with CM10. Such as stated here. [ROM] CyanogenMod 10.1 - WILD FOR THE NIGHT - Feb. 8, 2013 - xda-developers Make sure you have both the ROM and the GAPPS somewhere on your phone. It doesnt matter if it is located in internal or external storage.

Make sure you are not on JB or GB and stick with ICS, which you are on already. What you are going to need to do is get EL29 directboot CM Epic Touch: Tools
Im sure there are better ones out there now, but it has always worked for me. Hopefully you have Mobile Odin on your phone already so all you have to do is put that md5 in the kernel slot and flash. Before doing the previous step, I would ensure that everything you care about is safe somewhere.

This will take you to a CWM5 screen only. (You can do a nandroid backup if you want to) Even if you decide to restart your phone it will only go to this CWM5 screen until you flash something. From here you need to enable the back button enabled. I believe you have to press down keys 3 times up and 2 times down. Cant recall, Im sure someone will verify. Once that is enabled, make sure you wipe everything on your internal phone. Meaning factory reset, cache, and dalvik cache. Once completed with the clearing, flash the CM10 rom. DONT REBOOT YET. Make sure you also flash the gapps that you downloaded as well. Once that is completed reboot the device. Assuming all went well, your phone will boot into CM10.

Though many people say they "brick" there phones. I doubt it. If the phone can turn on, it can be fixed.

Any chance flashing CM10 would fix this new problem?

Thanks to rraman for the detailed info and instructions. I'll try it out later tonight, or tomorrow.

On the page you linked to here, what do they mean by the PDA slot? I have MobilOdin but I don't see anything labeled PDA.

The linked page gives instructions for MobileOdin and desktop Odin. PDA slot is desktop Odin. Look at the instructions above.

Hopefully. You were able to get your phone flashed to CM10
No, I haven't gotten around to it yet, hopefully tonight.

If you mean that it hopefully will solve my external SD-card issue I've pretty much worked around that one. I suspect the apps on the external card may have stopped working because it was nearly full. So now I'm putting only media files and podcast subscriptions there and everything's working fine. My music folder, in the old phone, was taking up about half of the external card, or 8Gb, and most of the rest was taken up by other apps and related files since there's no other place to put all that stuff on the Optimus S. With the new phone I don't have that problem.

So long story short...I don't plan to fill up my external card to the extent that I did before, so I may never find out if CM10 fixes it. ;)

Re: Update

I got everything flashed; looks good so far!

I was a little concerned because in the instructional video the narrator warns that the ROM flash will take a long time, but in my case it took only a few seconds, much less time in fact that the GAPPS flash that gets done next. No problems yet, though. And what's nice about this goaround is that it's automatically installing most or all of my apps.

Re: Update

Awesome 4G performance, and I was testing from a location on the borderline of 4G availability. Moreover, under stock ICS I couldn't run 4G at all

It's not the ROM, it's the modem or radio as in the LG Optimus. You could've just flashed a different radio on stock ICS.
