If carriers like AT&T and Verizon make the new Nexus phone available, will they be exactly the same as the phones sold through the Play Store? Or will they be AT&T and/or Verizon-branded, with their own bloatware added?

Might depend.... There was suppose to be no different between the Nexus 5 you bought directly from T-Mobile or Sprint than the one on the play store.... There was only a difference between a US version and International version... (and I believe the 32 gig version was only available via the play store)

The Verizon Galaxy nexus came with backup assistant and my Verizon. I think that was it I don't recall vzw navigator and all that crap

The verzion g nex also got updates later than the gsm version so keep that in mind

So did sprint. But honestly if it's no Nexus on Verizon or slower updates I'd choose slow updates every time. Plus launching with stock L is a big plus.

I'll be sticking with AT&T, so I'd be interested if anyone knows whether, IF they get the Nexus, they would be likely to add their own stuff on the phone. Since I'm on a family plan that I don't intend to change, it would be more convenient to just upgrade on contract and save the up-front cost of buying directly from Google. OTOH, if AT&T is going to load it up with a lot of extras, it would be worth it to pay the added cost and buy from Google (or maybe Best Buy?). The reason I'm considering the Nexus phone is to avoid the unnecessary stuff that can't be removed cluttering up my phone. I'm still weighing the benefits of the plain vanilla Android versus putting up with all the extra stuff and having a removable battery, plus an SD card. But I can't properly choose until I find out what Nexus 6/X really has to offer.

I want mine from the Play Store so I can put it on any carrier I want at any time I want. Also Google Wallet will not be locked down, unless you go the way of Verizon....

Google Wallet is available on 4.4 builds even on Verizon

The question I have is what the off-contract price would be through Verizon if they end up getting it. Would it be another case of a dramatic price increase if you don't buy directly from Google?

Carriers usually price the Nexus higher than the playstore version.

It will be much higher thru a carrier, and esp on Verizon. I have no doubt there will be no Verizon compatible version sold via Play store, and if is Verizon will block its activation. Never ever underestimate the depths of evil and darkness that is Verizon !!

I'm a newcomer to Android world, so I don't know all the history between Google and Verizon. What is the reason for the animosity? Why do so many refer to Verizon as "evil"? Just trying to catch up here.

Verizon is strict with the devices they allow on their network, including when it comes to updates (though their treatment of the Moto X last year proves that it's possible for them to update devices nearly as quickly as Google updates devices).

All of the "animosity" between Google and Verizon is invented by Android nerds. It is literally nothing but rumor. Seriously. It is nothing but rumor invented by people who were mad that the Verizon Galaxy Nexus was delayed in getting updates in comparison to the unlocked model. That is all it is. Google even said last year that they had plans and were working on something with Verizon this year.

I would take 99% of the complaining about Verizon with a grain of salt if I were you. A lot of it is not even true and a lot of it comes from people who aren't even customers. It's hardly worth paying attention to--I know this because I remain a Verizon customer. There are just a lot of ridiculous, uptight, and entitled people here who like to complain. And yes, I am aware that there will be people complaining that I spoke the truth about them in this post.

I use my Moto X to pay for things often. You're extremely misinformed.

Extremely misinformed? Little much isn't it? Since I'm on Verizon, have been using Google wallet for years without the ability to pay for purchases (currently on note 3) using nfc payments, I figured it still was not possible. If misinformed, inform me of what I'm missing without the attitude. I would love to be able to use it. I did not give attitude in my first comment "... I didn't think so." not... I "don't" think so *****.
