If rumors are true, Aria won't get Gingerbread

...as if I needed another thing to worry about. It was bad enough worrying if I would like the small screen, or AT&T's restrictions, or the slower specs, or the data caps, or whether it would even get a Froyo update. However, I was willing to consider the Aria since I could get it for free on Wirefly.com and I think my wife and I could live inside the $15 data tier, using wifi. Now, I have to worry about obsolescence coming before the end of the year.

I guess I just need to close my eyes and fork over the extra money it will take to get the good stuff on an android-friendly network.

When Gingerbread comes out, it is not like your phone will stop working. It will still do everything that you bought it for.

True. But it won't be able to do any new things or apps that gingerbread would allow. I realize this is the case with all technology, but I worry about a device that is outdated before it is even 6 months old, especially when I am locked into a 2-yr contract.

If u commit to smartphones u have to expect the device to be outdated in 6 months or less. I learned that with my first Treo. The first 12 months you won't have issue. It's the 12-18 while you wait to qualify for early upgrade, but you'll manage.

Sadly since the Aria when it was released was already behind the times there is not much that can be done. And by the time Gingerbread comes out I would suspect that 1Ghz processors will be the lower end ones since the dual cores will be hitting by then. Where the specs of the phone were fine for what the phone gave I refuse to buy tech that is already a generation behind. And that is exactly why I was not thrilled with this phone.

ditto, brivette007!
This phone is a far cry better than my last phone, so I'll be happy while I'm waiting for my new contract to run its' course. Maybe by then AT&T will have some dual-core Androids in its' stable!

Yeah, I think that is the conclusion I am at right now. It does so many more things than what my last phone did, I should be fine with what I have until I am ready for my next upgrade. Kinda like the jump from standard def to high def TVs. The jump from SD to HD is so large and impressive, 1080i is good enough.

Aria doesn't have the specs that were leaked to be minimum requirements for Gingerbread. Froyo will be on it and that will make the phone even "snappier" than it is now. The Aria is a great phone, but unfortunately it was launched as a middle of the road Android device. Higher end for AT&T, middle of the road for Android as a whole.

Smartphones as a whole get outdated in about 6 months anyway, you just have to decide to be happy with what you have after that. Yes next year top end phones will probably have dual core chips from Qualcomm. There was an article a while back that they are shipping to OEM's, but won't be out til at least early next year in devices.

It'll be interesting to see what we'll all be saying in 6-9 months! Will we still be "happy", or will we be saving up money to pay the ETF and get some better "gadget love" in our hands? lol! ;)

I'm not playing the latest and greatest game, all these phones will seem outdated a year from now anyway. That's not what the Aria is about, it's supposed to be a small affordable but still capable alternative in a time of giant (DroidX, Evo) smartphones. I'll be happy to get the Froyo update that should speed things up a little.

I am not concerned about gingerbread yet because that its still way out there, but I hope froyo will come on the Aria. I have only had it for 3 days now and its the best phone I have ever had in my life. Its only 600mhz but its plenty fast for everything I do, even the occasional games. Froyo will only make it better and I can see this phone lasting me all 2 years of my contract.

My GF friend just picked up the Aria Now I went from MT3G to the Vibrant I have to say yes it is not in the same league as the Galaxy S or Droid X but far superior to the MT3g and a great phone for that mid-level User. Now when Froyo does come out these phones will be faster with JIT. So I think for the normal user these will last the two years
