if the phone is rooted, is 3g mobile hotspot free

there is a wireless tether app floating around that will allow you to tether for free. just do a google search.

I don't think the "wireless tether" or "wifi tether" app shows up in the market anymore, I can't remember the actual name. I believe I read somewhere that Verizon has asked that the app no longer show up in the market for their phones.

However, there are other wifi tethering apps that still show and can be downloaded and installed. I've used both Barnacle and Open Garden wifi tethering apps so if you search for those on the market you should be in business.

And the name of this app, mike?

The one I use is called Wireless Tether. It works perfectly. Unfortunately, it worked too good because Verizon removed it from it's Marketplace. You can still find it on the Android Market though.

Here's the link. I'm running version 2.0.7. They have released version 2.0.8, but I've not tried that. I figured why mess with perfect, as 2.0.7 has worked flawlessly since I installed it.

really??? have not heard of that one. i use wireless tether myself. not a very creative name, but it does the job.

How have you not heard of Barnacle Mikey? I've seen it mentioned all over the place both here and at XDA. It was mentioned so often I downloaded it even though I don't tether. But I figured one day I might and I may as well grab the one everyone is mentioning.

I thought the same thing. I use Barnacle, works more consistently for me.

Isnt wireless tether built in to one of the Kernels?

There are kernels that have a dummy tether module which blocks the monitoring capabilities VZ addes to see of you were using other tethering apps. That is also why their 3g hotspot app is also built into the OS now instead of an apk in /system/app.

I used Barnacle over a weekend vacation a while back and didn't see any additional charges in my bill. I used to use wireless tether but Barnacle is more consistent for me.

Did an ESN change and then my 3g has been what it was like before.

What actually causes it to mess up? something in the Community Rom?

This latest 3G outage was apparently attributed to verizon and their techs screwing something up in the network when they were trying to do something with the 4G data stream.
