After 15 years with Verizon, I decided saving $40/month was prudent as I'm now on a fixed income. I left for T-Mobile (same service level as my Verizon account was) by "Porting Out" as they call it, i.e. I took my 2 phone numbers and went to T-Mobile (saved $40/month for the exact same service). Verizon does not support/sell the Nexus 5, which I wanted, so I bought 2 of them to use on T-Mobile. The phone numbers transferred quite easily, but the fun was only starting. I OWN 2 Samsung Galaxy S3's which were my Verizon phones. I want to sell them. The ESN's are clean. BUT, Verizon WILL NOT release the phones from my account so they can be registered by a new owner, until my service date is up. Since I Ported Out 5 days after my service date, they are HOLDING MY PHONES HOSTAGE, for 25 DAYS. I can't sell them because the new owner will want to active them on their account (duh!), and Verizon will not permit it. I had a business willing to buy both phones, until I/they found out they could not be re-activated for 25 days. This is absolutely ABSURD! I talked to 2 different people at Verizon and could get nowhere. I asked to speak to a Supervisor and was told one would call me back within 72 hours. Huh? Others BEWARE. If you're leaving Verizon and own your phones, leave just before or on your service date or you will be held HOSTAGE also.

Have you paid the final bill and any etf if applicable ? If so, then there would be no reason for them to hold your phones. But really, if you wanted to sell your phones, you should have placed dummy esns on the lines before cancelling service. Doing so would release the s3's. Optionally, you can now reactivate the s3's on new numbers and put dummy esns on the line and cancel service again. This will release the phones. They activation charge you an activation fee, but if you cancel within 3 days, the activation fee will be waived

You may want to check also because it sounds like the lines may be future dated to disconnect at the end of your next billing cycle, since you said you canceled 5 days after your last billing cycle. If that's the case, they may also still be charging you as well. It is common for all carriers to bill until the end of the cycle.

However, when did you initiate the Port Out Request with Tmobile? You may want to wait a day and check your VZW account again. I always thought that once a port out request was complete that the lines were disconnected immediately and not at the end of the billing cycle. Any ETF fee would also be charged at that time.

Assuming that isn't the case, what dpham00 said about reconnecting the lines and adding the dummy ESNs would also work.

The only reason I can think of for why your S3s are frozen is because they are billing you until the end of the billing cycle.

Dan, call Verizon's executive offices at 412-266-7767

If you port during a billing cycle they suspend the line for the rest of that cycle... No prorating of the fees. The phone is held on the suspended line until the end of the billing cycle.

So then what you need to do is put the ghost ESN on the line before porting.

That makes sense and coincides with what Verizon normally does, as far as billing to the end of the cycle. It is unfortunate that the OP wasn't able to cancel 5 days earlier, at the end of his last billing cycle. Considering he is no longer their customer, I wish the OP luck, but I wouldn't expect Verizon to cut him any breaks.

Since the line is suspended, just do what I said earlier. Activate the lines again with a new number , put a dummy esn, then cancel service again

how do you do this?

Since he already ported to tmobile, he can just call up Verizon with the account info and they can issue new phone numbers.

He can also port the numbers from tmobile back to Verizon if he wanted to

Wouldn't he get charged an ETF or doesn't TMobile do contracts any more? And even if they don't do contracts, do they charge an activation fee?

Assuming that he got an uncarrier plan, no etf or activation fee.

If he is on an old plan, then different story, but considering that he just moved, I am assuming that he is on the uncarrier plan.

Please note that while there is no etf on uncarrier, if you cancel service and got a phone through a payment plan, then the balance which may exceed $600 becomes due.

Make sure you ask around... a lot... and are not leaving them soley on price.... you don't want to get stuck switching to a carrier just for the price and end up hating it.

I cannot imagine why you would want to leave! Yes, Verizon is more expensive then most... But your GETTING what you pay for.... In the last 5 years, i have had SPRINT, TMOBILE and US CELLULAR! USC had a small coverage area... Sprint is in the middle of the NETWORK Rebuild and sucks hardcore and TMOBILE is a joke... Who are you gonna go to? AT&T? They now force all phones to have MOBILE VIRUS SOFTWARE on all phones, meaning more "FREEWARE" installed on the phones.... If you are switching to save money, just remember your HEADACHES will grow 10 fold....

This country is huge. No carrier is #1 throughout tbe entire nation. Here in new York City all 4 carriers have blazing fast LTE.

Dont assume everyone lives in the sticks.

At my work which is in a very densely populated urban area, both att and tmobile have signal issues, dropped signal and what not. Verizon is solid at my work. So it really just depends on where you are exactly. And I am sure that there are areas where another carrier has better signal that Verizon, so Verizon isn't the best for everyone

But some PEOPLE don't need all the coverage as not everyone TRAVELS alot so... Other carriers do WORK in places very well... Verizon isn't the only carrier that can have good THINGS due to price...

In all seriousness you act like all carriers suck everywhere and they don't. Carriers are highly dependent on area and a person's needs.

Example for me... $70 a month unlimited everything (yes data as well).... On Verizon I'd pay what... $100 or more for 2 GB before overages? As you can see below I use my data so yeah... And T-Moblie coverage is great in Jacksonville and I don't travel that much. So.. Verizon has zero benefit for me.

Over 90GB and the billing cycle isn't even over yet - what do you do sit around and watch movies all day?

Yep. December is a very slow month at work. Tons of our customers (civilians / military) take off for the holidays. It will pick back up.

Also that isn't much.. Others like dpham have used over 600 GB in a cycle before... No idea how lol.
