If you could choose VZW or ATT for this phone...

I am in a great position to upgrade and move forward with my smartphone life, and I want to be INFORMED as much as possible. Please share your thoughts.

I am currently an ATT customer off contract with a jb iP 3GS, which I am struggling with due to the small unclear screen, major lags, frequent hangs and lockups, and nearly zero. integration of anything google. Upgrading to a GNex will be huge and awesome for me, however you slice it.

Although I want a new phone now, I can wait a little longer if there's a benefit to it.

So, if you were to jump in on a 2yr contract for the GNex, would VZW be your hands-down favorite?

Here are my points to consider:
  1. I live in Dallas, where both appear to have solid service.
  2. The monthly cost of both is nearly the same (under $100/mo. for my needs).
  3. At this point, I am not a big data or talk user, under 500mins and under 2GB/mo.
  4. ATT *may* have the GSM version soon.
  5. I do not *need* a GSM phone... I am a local guy.
I have no problem going to VZW again... but I left them in 1997 after a long battle to free myself from their chains beginning with a technical problem, and ending with a difficult bureaucratic one. I bet their biz is fine now -- maybe -- but I still have a hard time forgetting. ATT gives me nothing special, and they mess up billing as well, but the customer service has been fine and no surprises or difficulties.

Basically I am in a position where I can consider either carrier for this phone, and I have time (but not so much patience!) to wait if there's something worth waiting for... purely subjective, i know. Still, if you were in my position, what would you consider or choose?

(And yes, I realize I'm asking in the VZW Gnex forum, and we're all foaming at the mouth now, so.... lol!)
Thanks y'all! :)

Verzion, purely for the national reception quality and 4G LTE. I switched from AT&T and im extremely happy. Its more expensive but worth it for the better network and 20mbps downloads when I walk outside the house.

Verizon

they are expensive but you do get alot in return. Excellent customer service, great coverage(i havent dropped a call in years, seriously), and some great phone choices.

What they said, plus no one knows when the Nexus will come to AT&T - only rumors at this point. Could be February, could be June...

I also say VZW. I was with ATT for 15 years and since I jumped ship I will never look back...

this is all exactly what i expected... but i had to ask. i just had such ugly problems with VZW back in the 90's. it's hard to forget, y'know. but seems most everyone around here talking says VZW's customer svc is good now. and, of course, the network.

well, i've always been with Verizon. and i hear enough from others about their issues with service/reception with AT&T and T-Mobile. I've seen more and more people change over to Verizon, coming from AT&T and T-Mobile.

I endured the days of Verizon when Verizon was the "uncool" carrier with the lamest phones. Verizon's done a complete 180. Now, verizon has the best phones, in my opinion, (in the US) but it comes at a cost, a much higher cost, for those phones and great reception.

i'd much rather be with Verizon, it's overall great reception, and obviously their much more established 4G LTE network. I've worked on several carrier network applications/entitlements, and Verizon definitely stood out among the pack (versus AT&T, sprint, t-mobile, clearwire) as having the most applications for Wireless Telecommunications Facilities in the area where I work.

I have Verizon and don't plan on leaving them anytime soon because their coverage in Michigan is much better then any other provider. I have never had any issues with them and the customer service has always been top notch for me. I have good friends that work for both companies and my At&T buddy is very happy with his service. I'm sure I didn't help you decide with my response, hopefully others can help out more. Good Luck

1. Draw
2. Draw
3. Draw
4. Verizon - No contest - phone not available or announced on AT&T
5. NA

Other considerations:
1. Speed - Verizon
2. Coverage (you ever leave town?) - Verizon

Any other questions?

If you are happy with your at&t service and are willing to wait a bit for the galaxy nexus to arrive there I would suggest you stay with them, especially if you have unlimited data.

The only reason I could possibly understand for staying with AT&T is if you were on a grandfathered unlimited data plan. Otherwise, Verizon is a no brainer for the coverage and the LTE network (though I do get great customer service from them, too).

sorry, forgot to mention... i do not have unlimited data on ATT.

decided... if VZW does indeed offer the GNex this week (or anytime before ATT), i'm moving to VZW. thank you all. :D

You'll get double data at Verizon right now. If coverage is equal, you'll be best with Verizon. I've had good CS with them. I felt I got a bad deal on a flip phone years ago, and wrote an email (POLITELY) to their CS and explained my case. In a few days, they mailed me a check for the difference and apologized.

I'll pay a few extra bucks a month...

Also, I've hated AT&T since the 80s. They ads were annoying. Their home service was awful. And not I work in IT and we had to move our huge network to another provider, which cost us millions since their service was so bad. I was never surprised to hear about iPhone issue with AT&T. As far as I can tell, they can't do anything right.

To be fair, I have friends on AT&T (in small markets) who have had nothing but good things to say with their cell service.

The only reason I could possibly understand for staying with AT&T is if you were on a grandfathered unlimited data plan.

Not even that, anymore. AT&T severely throttles its customers with grandfathered unlimited data plans. It's actually worse than having tiered data, since they throttle you down to little better than dial-up speed for the rest of the current billing period after you reach some moving target of data consumption--generally somewhere between 2GB and 5GB. You might as well just stick the phone in your top drawer and forget about it for the rest of the month, at that point.

Oh, and Verizon and AT&T are roughly comparable price-wise when you factor in tiered data plans. If there was a dramatic price difference, that might be a factor, but there isn't.

Basically, my conclusion after doing extensive research recently is that both AT&T and Verizon are evil. Go with the lesser of two evils, in other words the one that provides better coverage in your area. The OP is in Dallas, so that might just be AT&T, since they seem to have Texas covered pretty well. They suck in Washington DC compared to Verizon, that's all I know. I was originally with Big Red in my flip-phone days and had great service--almost never dropped a call. I switched to AT&T to get the iPhone 3GS and almost immediately noticed inferior coverage, based on frequent dropped calls and no-service areas.

I'm switching to Verizon once the Galaxy Nexus becomes available.

and now for the interesting part. my next ATT bill is due on the 15th. i just have to keep that acct open to keep my number and get it transferred into VZW. so, it's w/in 2 weeks or i'm paying another month to ATT.
