Hi there everyone I've got an interesting question for you. I gave my first generation Moto X to my dad he uses it on wifi only. My 2nd gen by the way I want to use an instant messaging app with him and I'm trying Google Hangouts, bbm and none of them seem to work very well. They all smoke my battery, and my RAM memory usage on both phones. The problem with whatsapp and kik messaging is that they need a carrier phone number and he doesn't have one. Does anyone know of any other solution or alternate to this at all? Any feedback is appreciated thank you.

You can use Viber without a SIM card, for messages, calls or even video calls. Your father will need to give a phone number when setting it up to receive an sms and activate the account. I did the same with my parents in an only WiFi tablet.

I prefer Viber over Skype.

No, I understand that but my dad doesn't have a cell phone number at all. That's the thing.

I know. You can use a relative of a friend number for that. The only thing is, that number is going to be the account for Viber so no one else can use it.

Let's say your uncle Tom has a feature phone. Tell him what you're going to do. He'll receive an sms with a code to input in your father phone to activate the account. The only catch is that Tom won't be able to open an account with Viber with that number. All communications go through WiFi so no worries there.

Oh I got you. Are there any other applications for instant messaging you need a possibility of at the moment though?

Another thing. I don't know how it works in your country. Here, in Brazil, it's very cheap and easy to buy a prepaid sim card. If that's possible make an initial bonus charge and set as many accounts as you need. Viber, whatsapp ... And when done you can forget the card. All communications will go through WiFi and the phone number is used just for the initial setup.

Haha no I got to my dads ironically has a tmobile prepaid phone however the service sucks on it and he doesn't really use it for data communication whatsoever. I mean I wouldn't mind using Google Hangouts or the newest version of BBM if it didn't my battery apart, for you so much RAM system memory, but it does it also he eats my battery up exponentially. So much so I can fry an egg on the back of my moto x. Unfortunately. Then everyone tells me to do and you must be the only one with this issue, & I must say bye to them I probably am but the fact of the matter is I used up about 45 percent of my battery in two hours which is unheard of with my settings.

There you go! Use that prepaid and open a whatsapp account with that number. You just need a Number, not a card! For example, when I travel abroad I use to buy a prepaid card. I remove my normal card and put the new one. But I keep using Viber or whatsapp, in WiFi, with my normal account, and the chip is in a plastic bag until I get back home!!

Other possibility could be Skype.

Yes, but you see with his t-mobile sidekick he doesn't pay for data only voice and texting which barely works as it is. I'm not trying to make it sound like I'm going to cross the road so to speak but I am. This is what the hell to do you really understand email him from his hotmail account to my gmail account but is not the quickest and I like the threaded conversation with him of course. I just feel like I'm missing something in the application world. And I'm usually a pro at this!

What? You don't need a data plan, you don't even need a SIM card in your phone to use those apps!. Sorry, but I don't understand you.

About your phone. That's not normal behaviour at all. Something is wrong.

Yeah that's what I thought as well, regarding applications but the second I uninstall the two apps off my phone my phones battery and memory it went right back to be normal. If you searched all over the blogs and on the forums, a lot of other Android users are complaining about the same thing with the latest update of BBM and Google Hangouts.

Well, Hangouts come pre-installed on the Moto X 2014 (and I imagine on the Moto X as well)... I know there were some older bugs (beginning of 2014) that caused some battery drain issues but I have not seen any since. You're seeing it even with just Hangouts installed and BBM uninstalled?

I saw the battery drainage with hang outs. Bbm the older version has very delayed message response times so I am going to try another I'm app and hope it works...
