Thanks again for all the help! I am now rooted with AC-ROM-Froyo 2.2. I was able to run my EVO as a hot spot...very cool.

I've got a few basic questions

(1) What exactly is a ROM? A set of programs that run on the Android OS? Or is it the actual OS that is modified by a 3rd party?
(2) Can I run more than one ROM at a time?
(3) As root I can run applications as a super user...Where do I find these applications?
(4) If I change ROMs, move from 'AC-ROM-Froyo 2.2' to 'CM6', will I lose all my settings.
(5) Now that I am rooted...What steps need to be done to run another/different ROM? (I have Mod Manager installed)
(6) How do I know when ROMs are patched? How easy is it to apply a patch?
(7) Anywhere on my phone that will tell me what ROM(s) I am Running?

Sorry for all the questions. I just want to get all the information I can...I am having so much fun in the Adroid world!! As my knowledge grows I will in turn be able to help others. Thanks in advance!

I've got a few basic questions

A - A ROM is an actual OS created by a third party. Using your current ROM as an example, Beezy and myself worked on creating that ROM from the HTC Froyo source.
(2) Can I run more than one ROM at a time?
A - only 1 ROM at a time. You can flash as many ROMs in a day as you want but only run 1 at a time.
(3) As root I can run applications as a super user...Where do I find these applications?
A - There is no one single answer to this. Some can be found on websites like XDA or others and some can be found in the market. An example of a root application is wireless tether that comes built into the AC-ROM. Another example is SetCPU which can be found in the market or XDA.
(4) If I change ROMs, move from 'AC-ROM-Froyo 2.2' to 'CM6', will I lose all my settings.
A - Yep, Part of flashing ROMs is doing a data wipe. There are tools to help you easily restore your information though things such as mybackup and titanium backup.
(5) Now that I am rooted...What steps need to be done to run another/different ROM? (I have Mod Manager installed)
A - Download the ROM from a source, either ROM manager or the developers page, go into recovery, wipe, flash
(6) How do I know when ROMs are patched? How easy is it to apply a patch?
A - Depends. If it's a clockwork ROM you can check for updates inside of ROM Manager. If it's not then you just keep an eye on the developers page.
(7) Anywhere on my phone that will tell me what ROM(s) I am Running?
A - Menu > settings > About Phone . Software information - Build Number

See above in bold. Hope this helps.

You might be interested in THIS. AndroidCentral.com has an amazing tool called the Android Dictionary (incredibly under utilized IMHO) and it's a great place to start learning what things are when you hear some of us throw around terms like "Recovery" or "ADB".
