Im trying to root my phone (lg k8+ 2018) and i cant get to the bootloader

[Android Central Question]

i hooked up my phone to my computer and got all the drivers to do it and for some reason when i type "adb reboot bootloader" my phone reboots and says firmware update with a box of letters at the bottom and i cant do any of the commands websites say to do to root your phone

Why do you want to root?
Do you homework before you do this , like how to return back to stock if something goes wrong.
