Improving fingerprint recognition

I purchased my Note 10+ 5G direct from Samsung a couple of weeks ago. Very pleased with it so far, but having issues with fingerprint recognition. I have the latest updates for the phone and as well as the latest biometric security patches. All fingers have been re-registered.

My device was delivered with a screen protector already applied.

Some have suggested increasing the screen sensitivity for use with screen protectors. I'm skeptical of this because the fingerprint reader uses ultrasonic sound waves to read prints, and therefore it's not based on touch sensitivity. So I'm reluctant to turn on that option and re-register prints again because it might be a waste of time. Also, I haven't noticed any issues with screen sensitivity anyway.

So, here's the question! Can anyone say for sure that removing the screen protector really does improve fingerprint recognition on the Note 10?

I've managed to scuff the edges of the screen protector even though I use a case, so I really don't want to remove it unless it makes a substantial improvement. Perhaps there are screen protectors out there that have a hole over the fingerprint reader sensor area?

Fingerprints can be tricky. sometimes cold weather affects them. I actually will breathe on them to warm them up.

I had no problem with the FPS with the original factory screen protector. I scan each thumb twice for finger print use.

After removing the factory installed screen protector, I never got the "press harder" prompt again and the recognition itself was noticeably faster.

Try redoing the same fingerprint a few different times this worked for me but the sensor does not work as well as we want worst part of the Notes 10.

One consideration is that the fps seems to fail a lot if your fingers are dry. That's probably because your finger slides around on the screen; friction from moisture helps hold it in place. I've found that the fps works with dry fingers if I stand still and take great care to hold my finger still. But what's easier is just to moisten my finger first, as people in previous centuries did before turning the page of a book.

I also removed the factory screen protector and saw an immediate improvement. If reluctant, do as others have suggested and register each finger twice.

I went extreme and recorded one fingerprint four times. Still not 100% though. I was at about 99.9% until the December update. Hoped when the update to 10 came out it would return to prior level, but it didn't. Even after a factory reset I had to once again record only one finger for times for even minimally consistent performance. I have no screen protector and have sensitivity turned up.

Trust me. Removing the screen protector makes the FPS works way way better. But if you remove it and it still doesnt work flawlessly then you might have a faulty unit.

After watching the video, it seems like I've been doing it all wrong. Now when I use fps, it is more consistent and quick.

That actually worked GREAT. I don't understand why he used both thumbs to create one fingerprint, though. I created 2 fingerprints, one with each thumb, doing the up/down/left/right sequence with the Dome Glass protector on, and it works much faster and easier now than it ever did.

Very cool! Now either thumb works from the same scan. With all Samsung FP scanners, even on buttons, I found a lighter touch is best.

Hello, and many thanks for everyone's comments.
I'm going to keep the factory-installed screen protector, then re-register my FP's using the suggestion on Reddit. If it still doesn't work well, I'll try it without the screen protector. I'm not sure about trying the dome glass protector, it sounds very good, but I'm not confident I can fit it without messing it up, and wasn't sure if it's a permanent fit that can't be undone.

The results are in!
I followed the advice in the redit link video, and with the finger installed screen protector, it took a long time to register prints and still near impossible on my right thumb. I peeled off the screen protector and repeated the process, this time successfully. I now get fast and reliable scans. I also tried toggling the screen sensitivity which for me made no differences to the speed or accuracy of scans. That's in line with my view expressed earlier. I noted that it still took quite a while to register using my right thumb, I think that's down to years of DIY and not having much of a print left to scan.
