Hey all,

For whatever reason, Inbox/Gmail doesn't show banner notifications when I received a new email. The icon is shown in the notification bar but not the drop down banner. Does anyone know how to enable this feature for Inbox/Gmail?

This has been driving me crazy on my Nokia 5. I think the answer is, for all Android's 'customisability' (I just switched from iOS), the stock version doesn't support banner notifications for emails – and that's ANY email app, as far as I can tell. I created a workaround with a couple of IFTTT applets so I get an SMS whenever i receive an Inbox or Outlook notification, but obviously it's not ideal. Are you on Oreo or Nougat? Was hoping the issue would be addressed with the update.

I've had the same problem on my Huawei P10. Only email apps that weren't appearing on the banner drop down so I've installed a 3rd party up called 'Heads Up Notifications' by Simen.codes and set it up just to show banners for my email apps that were missing. Now it all works great and there's quick actions included to reply etc too

Priority notifications get banners. If your phone supports it, set the email notifications to high priority. You can also install a customizable 3rd party headsup app.

Stumbled across the native solution. Here's what you do:

1. Pull down the notification panel and hold the settings gear icon for a few seconds. When you release it, you should get a toast saying 'Congrats! System UI Tuner has been added to settings'.

2. Scroll down to the bottom of the settings menu and go to System UI Tuner --> Other --> Power Notification Controls. Toggle them on. (You can then, if you wish, hold down on the settings icon again to re-hide the UI Tuner/hide the ugly wrench icon that appears next to the gear icon/rotate the gear icon back to its proper orientation.)

3. Go into notifications and select the app you want to display a banner. There'll be a greyed out slider next to an 'A' in a blue circle. Click that circle to un-grey the slider and set it to level 4: 'Always peek. No full screen interruption.' (Note the very first level is level 0 rather than level 1.)
