Android Central Question

I love my samsung galaxy S8. However, I really envy the 'portrait' mode on the new iphones and I really wished samsung had that on their camera. Can they incorporate that in any of the new software updates?

A version is already installed. Open the camera app. Swipe left to right to expose different shooting options. You're looking for "Selective Focus". It's not quite as smooth as the iOS mode, but has worked well for me.

selective focus not the same as portrait mode unfortunately it's for really up close objects :(

not the same but it actually does pretty decent if you position yourself correctly

(nowhere near as good as a real portrait mode tho)

There is a Google Pixel 2 portrait camera app mod that I believe was ported by an xda developer that I read about and put on my S8+ and it works incredibly well, but only with the rear camera, not the front camera.

It takes 2 pictures, one regular, one with the background blurred - see below

would you mind sharing that link i would like to test that out :)

I tested it out and both cameras perform differently

the Samsung stock app looks a bit better to me (tested the apps side by side and the stock app always had more detail and the portrair effect looked almost identical)

I don't have the link but a simple search for "Galaxy s8 Google camera mod" should bring up the xda post

The difference with the S8 stock 'Selective Focus' is that you have to have your subject like 2 feet away or closer for it to work. This Pixel camera port can be used as any regular camera picture at any reasonable distance and works pretty great overall. It seems a little slower than the S8 regular camera so I don't use it as my go to camera, but when i want stylish pix with the blurred background, it's nice to have!

And i forgot to mention this Google Pixel camera port also has HDR+ so I've taken a lot of cool pix that the S8 doesn't match with it's regular HDR function.

Top picture is the S8 regular camera with HDR on. Bottom picture is with the Google camera mod app with HDR+ on. No filters used.

I just tested that app and it's not too bad although I find the app not so stable. I really wish Samsung would just apply that to their current camera filter especially the fact that you don't really need 2 cameras to do portrait mode as it's already proven by Pixel 2 that it can be done. And it's not like S8/S8 + is too slow to be able to do that. My guess they don't want you to keep the phone for more than 1 yr lol as they expect users to keep changing their phone every year.

Hmm. Since we are not Samsung, how would we know whether the manufacturer is able to or willing to? Might want to ask Samsung.
