Android Central Question

incoming group messages now come in as separate messages from the sender and need to be downloaded. Once downloaded they open in the group message. PITA! What can be done to correct this?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone, and which messaging app? Open your messaging app, go to its settings and look for an option for group messaging. Make sure it's set for MMS (group messaging) rather than individual SMS messages.

Also, if you're getting messages that say "Tap to Download," it usually means there's a problem with mobile data. Make sure your mobile data is turned on. If it is and you're still having trouble, check your APN settings and make sure they're correct for your carrier.

I had this issue as well,

Solved it by going the message apps settings, multimedia settings and turning on auto-retrieve while roaming (the regular auto-retrieve was already on) but for some reason the while roaming one needs to be on as well, that's what worked for me

I have a LG v20 with Nougat 7.0.

I want to continue using the stock messaging app. I dont want to use Google's messaging app.

The messaging app does not have a setting to toggle mass text/group text.

What do you suggest, other than Google's/third party messaging app?

Welcome to Android Central! Try a 3rd party SMS app like Textra, if you want to avoid Google. Otherwise, there's not much you can do if the stock app doesn't have the option.
