Looking to root using the new Unrevoked3 method, but will want to unroot when/if the new OTA ever gets released. Having a tough time finding instructions on how to unroot besides a complete wipe. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm basically looking to root, then unroot when an OTA is released, then root again.

ok, let me re-ask this a different way.

Say I root my incredible today, and the Froyo OTA comes out as speculated next month. Will it just automatically unroot my phone and be back to stock running 2.2, or will I need to unroot in order to get the OTA? I would have to imagine that just getting root wouldnt prevent OTAs but not sure since I'd be using the Unrevoked3 method. If that is the case, can i just root it again after the OTA is complete?

It's hard to say, since we don't know exactly what the OTA update is going to be like. (Although we have pretty good idea, sure.) As I'm sure you researched, you can root your phone and leave everything on it intact as before root, Sense, Apps, Data, arrangement, the whole nine yards. There is also a possibility, although not confirmed, that your cell phone [after gaining super user access] may still apply the FroYo update to your phone [although possibly killing off your super user access in the process].

As suggested so many times before, since there is a possibility of loosing everything on your phone, even doing everything correctly, you should back everything up. Perform Nandroid and Titanium backups after rooting. Use an app like App Brain (which doesn't require root) to save all your apps if you loose them. Use some sort of Backup Assistant App, note specific settings somewhere not on your phone, or perhaps ensure all your contacts are available on Facebook and/or your Google account so you can easily resync them back if needed.

This is the guide I used by the way for root:

@doomsjay: awesome thanks. Nice to finally see a step by step tutorial laying out all the options. The Evo method should just give root access leaving everything stock correct? Sounds to me like i shouldnt worry too much about the OTA as it seems that most folks believe rooted phones will get it anyway and just lose root, which I can live with pending i can root again afterwards.

Question though regarding the steps on your link that describe using the recovery reflash tool. Will using this cause my phone to be considered non-stock? I honestly like it how i have it, just want root access.

If you need to return your phone for warranty rooted, it a reason to void the warranty.

It's possible the devs will have the bugs worked out of their ROMS before Verizon releases the OTA. I'm rooted, I plan to stay rooted, and simply wait for the devs to do their thing.

BTW...wiping a phone does not undo root.
