I brought my phone in to Verizon with a problem with the touch screen not responding . I was told that I would receive a replacement , when the replacement came it was a refurbished model . Is this normal practice even if the phone was purchased brand new and is only four months old?

pretty standard across most electronic devices. You only get a "new replacement" if it is within your standard return period.

However, my brother's DINC started acting up earlier this month (he bought it in May) and they sent him a new one. Go figure.

ok thanks I thought since it was still covered under the factory warranty that I would receive a brand new phone

good thing about the refurbs though is you get a better chance of receiving a Dinc with the amoled instead of the SLCD.

if in the first 30 days the store will give you a new one. after 30 days it is refurb

Check the refurb well.

My 1st refurb had a reset problem.
with the 2nd one the camera wouldn't focus.

getting 3rd tomorrow.

Unfortunately, you get a refub'd unit, fortunately, you may be getting the AMOLED...which is much better than the SLCD.
