I prefer using Verizon Messages+ on my phone.

How can I receive and reply to text messages on the watch without having to use my Note 4's native text messaging application?

Go to settings --> More --> default messaging app

You can choose which one you want to be default in your case Verizon Messages

Can I reply to text messages using Messages+ on the watch?

Only the default Samsung Text message app allow reply on the watch.

I use gear notification extender to reply to all kind of messages from the watch... Unfortunately the developer stopped to support this app.

I found a copy. But, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to get the notifications to show up allowing me to reply to Message+ and Gmail.

Did you enable GNE to read notifications in the settings of the phone? Did you enable GNE in gear manager options to receive notifications?

I don't know the messages+ app, but I think that setting correctly this app in GNE you can easily reply from the watch via keyboard or via svoice... That's what I do on my gear s with all the apps that can have replies (gmail, inbox, hangouts, WhatsApp, Google messenger etc...)
