Inserting new SIM card while phone turned may wipe your S9!

Just got my new S9 in the mail unlocked from Samsung. When I inserted a new SIM card, it instantly rebooted and wiped itself.

Previous to that, I had used Smart Switch to migrate my S5 over to my S9. At that time, my SIM and SD cards were still in the S5. I seemed to remember that the S5 didn't have to be powered down to insert cards, so I ejected the S9 caddy, put in the cards, and inserted it while it was powered on. Immediately, the S9 shut down, and as it was starting up, said "formatting" or something to that effect, and is now at the welcome screen as if it had been wiped.

So, big warning out there - don't do this if you have an S9! Fortunately for me, I had nothing on the S9 that can't be recovered through another Smart Switch procedure. But imagine one's sense of panic if you were to do this later on. Starting the phone from scratch, it seems to realize that it needs to restore the phone from backup, but that shouldn't even be necessary had it not been wiped!

From googling around, it seems like this bug/feature has been around since the S7, and seems to stem from the carrier specific information needing to install onto the phone. It was described as a security feature when a new carrier SIM is inserted.

There seems to be a workaround listed https://forums.androidcentral.com/s...15355-adding-sim-card-causes-hard-resets.html , but it's probably simpler to just insert your SIM card first, do the basic setup, *then* take out the SIM card if you need it in your other phone.
