Installing new app always puts icon on a new homepage

On every other Android phone or tablet I've used, if I install a new app, then the icon for that app is added to one of the existing home-page screens if they have space. On this Samsung T580 Tab 10.1 I find that despite page 1 having a few icon spaces free, and page 2 having even more free, it feels the need to create a new 3rd page and put the icon there.

So every time I install a new app I have to swipe along to the 3rd page, long-press the icon and drag it to the 1st or 2nd page, then go back and delete that 3rd page.

I haven't tried leaving one icon on the third page and installing another app to see if I get a 4th page but I wouldn't be surprised if I did.

It's using Android 6.0.

I moved this from the Galaxy Tab 10.1 forum (for the original Galaxy Tab, which is very old, and therefore the forum isn't visited often) to the Tab A forum.

I believe that the system looks for an empty slot at the lower right of the homescreen. If there's no empty slot, then it creates a new homescreen to the right. Silly, yes, but it's been described before.

Thanks B. Diddy. That was it !! Although my two desktop screens were faaaaaaar from full, I did have an app shortcut in the bottom right corner on them both. Once I moved one of them elsewhere, I could then install a new app without getting a new screen. :) :D
