Installing Rom Modifications

If I'm installing a modification to a Rom, like a small fix, a status bar mod, or something along those lines, do I just boot into recovery and install from SD or should I wipe the cache partition first? What specifically is on that partition? Would I lose anything?

Yes just wipe /cache and /data/dalvik-cache.

Inside Dalvik cache Are info/data pertaining to all apks and framework jar. When a smali edit is made on a app its wise to wipe those partitions to remove the old data. Thats why its recommended.
