Installing rooted ROM on non-rooted phone?

Hey guys, quick question: I saw on flipz website that he has a stock 2.2 rom that is already rooted. Since its an update.zip file, would I be able to flash this onto my non-rooted 2.2 and if so, would it give me root access? I don't know a whole lot about this kind of stuff and would like to root my 2.2 EVO but I have a Mac and not a PC, and so far there hasn't been any Mac method yet. I don't care so much about installing a custom ROM, since I'm fine with the stock one, all I want is the ability to remove some of the Sprint bloatware.

you need root to do any rom flashing.
