Just switched from iOS to Android so I don't really know where to start . Also just wondering, is it true that my phone will lose warranty if it is rooted ? Is there a walkaround solution ?

Awhile ago I remember some company whos name escapes me at the moment, that could tell if your phone was rooted or not, even after you "unroot"...Is this still happening or has that been stopped?
Ah yeah..it was the Morotola RAZR M I Think...guess they built in a root checker in the recovery,,,but I think there was a workaround.. With as friendly as HTC is with modders...I highly doubt they would include this "feature"

We've ask the mods to make a stickie for this lol. But go here for rooting needs. Xda is the place for hacking lol.

Welcome to android! Rooting the ov is intimidating when you read through the forums. Read the and over at xda and ask questions on anything you aren't sure about. There is a great group the for the one.
Your warranty will be voided when you root because you have to unlock your bootloader. This phone is so crippled when it is stock. Do your research and if you have any questions just post here. You can always send a private message to me if you need help.

I know for sure I will be rooting but with the little variety by way of roms to choose from...ill wait

Thanks guys. I've heard that the new official update from HTC will cause some issues with the device if it is rooted. Is it true ? Because I have just updated mine and I am not sure if I can root it.
What would be the reason to root the phone? I'm not familiar at all with rooting since I'm still new to Android. And also you say you've udpated yours... which update is this?
Well, same reason for jailbreaking the iPhone I suppose. The update from HTC, 1.29 which will improve the camera and other stuffs. It's only available in Europe at the moment.
Hmm ok, I don't really see the purpose of rooting on Android just yet, it's already more customizable than an iPhone. I've jailbroken iPhones many times, and most times it was for visuals. I don't know that I'll have that issue with the One.

I think updates are my only worry about Android, obviously it's never been an issue for iPhone users... but not getting updates will be an issue for me. I hope to get proven wrong with it!I would like to know this as well.

Root is not required to flash custom ROM. Keep in mind that most Custom ROM are pre rooted. See my thread for information and links

Great info, I must admit that I'm really interested in flashing a custom ROM to improve performance and get rid of bloat... but this seems nothing like Jailbreaking an iPhone lol. I have way too questions still to be comfortable in doing this. iPhone was easy, screw up and you're one click to restoring back to factory defaults. Doesn't look as easy on Android. I have an HTC One from Rogers, and unlocked using a code from a site so that I can use any SIM card... how do I know which stock firmware is like the one I have now? Can you and how do you get updates after flashing? How to do "restore back to defaults"... too many questions lol
Yeah flashing ROMs isn't for everyone and no one should do it unless they are comfortable with everything. And yes, depending on the device, method and tools available, recovering a device can be quite a task rather than just restoring in iTunes. Definitely agreed there. Typically, if following the instructions correctly, it's difficult to get your phone into a state where you can't recover or have trouble doing so. Always read the disclaimers and prereqs by the devs in their threads. In my thread, I point over to XDA and there are threads over there that discuss how to get back to stock. I would suggest exploring the threads over there to really understand the processes related to your device. Also, unlocking the SIM is completely separate of anything with "hacking" your device.

I'm definitely going to root mine at some point, but I generally wait a few weeks to make sure no hardware issues show up. Once I'm satisfied I didn't get a lemon I'll free my phone!
To the person who asked about updates and rooting, you never want to accept carrier OTAs after rooting. The biggest risk is that it will take away root and it may be awhile before the root methods work with the updated software. If you're rooted and staying on the stock ROM wait until someone over at XDA or another developer site comes out with a version of the patch for rooted users.
