The stories about exploding malware in Google Play make me not want to do that. Sure Netflix, Isntagram, Hulu won't have it. But how do I know that nice Twitter app isn't malware?

I've installed Lookout on my devices.

I feel that the best protection is responsible user behavior, however, and implementing that philosophy has kept me free from headache in all my years of fiddling about with computers.

There are plenty of anti-virus apps you can get. Though, you should use your better judgement. You can read plenty of reviews in the comment section and find out what apps to get and not get. Also, there are plenty of Apps that Android Central has listed.

Sadly, I think you are just getting caught up in media hype. I have been with Android since the G1 launch and I personally have downloaded Zero Malware apps.

I agree both that the malware stuff has gotten hyped and overblown and that simply being careful about what you download (like in all OSes) is the best defense.

Agree with all previous responses. In general, I think this is FAR over hyped and is more about media sensationalism than anything else. That said, I try to use good judgment--I download apps that have a fair number of previous downloads and reviews and I use Lookout, which scans everything I download before installation. I've been using Android devices for almost 3 years now and have not had a single problem.

So you dont use a pc or a mac? I dont understand the fear. THe play store is not the darknet, it is a repository for apps. If it looks funky, it probably is. Use your common sense.

Overblown...compounded by people sideloading pirated apps and people loading the free softporn apps (sort of like hitting porn sites on a PC browser infects your system w/ malware).

Install Lookout on your device and worry less about it...

I can't imagine it's any worse than downloading software on the web. You follow good common sense and security precautions, download and get an account for the lookout app and you won't be any worse for wear than anyone else who's got a smartphone, computer, tablet etc. You can't hide from all things bad. You could step off the sidewalk into the street and get hit by a car after you read my post. Does this mean you're not going to cross the street anymore? Same principal.
