Just found this comment on a AC homepage post:

Yeah, The Merge will be a Premium Retailer exclusive to begin, just like the Devour, boy are we excited! We could get the iPhone until April 1st, but, hey! We get exclusivity on a low to mid-range Android!! That makes up for the lost sales!!

If this is true, my only bone to pick will be having to go to a store to pick it up....(I hate dealing with people) but I'll do so if that's what it takes to get Merge.

I saw that comment, too, and wrote to the local PR chain in my area. The guy wrote back yesterday and said that he's starting to hear more about this phone "beyond the typical Internet conversations." Take that FWIW.

He also said that he might have more info for me "within the next 3-4 business days."

Then, he suggested I consider the TB. :)

So... it could be nothing--they could just really want to hang on to my attention in the hopes I buy *something* from them in the end. BUT, it could also mean that the Merge is coming. I wrote back to say yes, please let me know if you hear anything.

We'll see...

Perhaps he was having atypical Internet conversation. Like a phone fetish forum? :)

Keep us posted.

So with the release of the HTC Sensation I have to vent a moment. In the months since the Merge was first tested by Phil, how many freaking HTC "black slab" phones have come out/been announced??? How many?!?!

Yet there is nothing, NOTHING with a decent freakin keyboard!! WTF is with these companies?!?! Or is it us, those who want a decent physical keyboard who are insane/wrong because we don't enjoy tapping on a piece of glass to type, and all the fun auto correct and deletion shenanigans that go with a virtual KB...what the deuce is the problem here us, or the phone manufacturers!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::'(

......okay....i feel a little better know....:(

I agree. I can only blame "one" phone for this...the writing was on the wall as soon as June 07 hit. -_- People all want "thin", because a slightly thicker phone than the iPhone is now considered "chubby", so phone makers say..well let's cut off the keyboard.

I hear ya about typing on the screen...its doable...but I dislike it and feel that if it wasn't for the Droid 1's crap spacing, I'd be able to beat out the on screen just due to having to not go back and correct things due to the auto correct...yet I need the auto correct because w/out it the virtual is unusable. :/

I think the phone makers/carriers think we're all old farts who are "behind the times." There's a huge market ( ages 15-25) moving laterally from BlackBerries and non smartphones looking for something that can type as good as those phones can...it's a gap that Verizon's leaving wide open.

I for one, don't really find the iphone design all that inspired. I guess it's sleek, but a black block with one button doesn't really do it for me. I guess I'm okay with thin, but not too thin.

It's really disappointing that Verizon has decided not to service this sector of the market- particularly since the device is already in production and they have clearly spent the $ on preparing to market it.

I've all but decided to move to sprint. It's not what I really want, but at least they're trying to accommodate more than just the iwish iwas iphone looks and functionality.

Alltel is local to me, but I'm pretty wary of regional carriers- particularly CDMA ones.

dude go with alltell!! worst thing that can happen is that a major carrier picks up the rest of whats left from verizon's stake, then you get the merge!! and the network too.

Switch

If Alltel is available and you want the Merge, definitely switch! The only thing Verizon has over Alltel anyway is phone selection (and now LTE).

Consider:
  • Comparable plan is less expensive
  • No 5GB data limit
  • Does not lock down / add bloatware to phones (for example, I'm sure they will lock the SIM slot, which Alltel didn't)
  • Roaming agreements with both Sprint and Verizon, so you may get whichever service is better in a given area (their parent company is a roaming provider so they can probably negotiate pretty good deals)
  • Supporting the little guy maintains a more competitive market

In fact, the only reason I can think of why someone would choose Verizon is with an extreme company discount or for their phone selection... if Verizon is the provider without the phone you want it seems like an easy choice! [ Posted from my Merge on Alltel : ) ]
