Internal Memory at Capacity - Changing MicroSD Card Help

My S5 internal memory is at capacity and has been. I've been moving apps to current sd card and deleting apps I don't use to make room but i'm done with that.....i keep running out of memory so I purchased a Samsung Pro 32Gb MicroSDHC Class 10 (Model MB-MG32D) card to replace the one I currently am using.

First I'd like to know if there is anything I need to do to the new card before using it?

Second, what is the easiest, most efficient way to copy my old card to the new card? Is that even the right thing to do? I'm not real technical as to what to keep/save or the file structure of the current card etc. I never take the card of of my phone or connect my phone to my computer. Did moving the apps to the sd card hurt my cause and do i need to move them back? Unfortunately I probably can't move them back at this point because of internal space.

I really need to step by step instructions......any help is appreciated.

There isn't anything you need to do with the new card before using it. The card should come pre-formatted and ready to go. The easiest way to transfer content from the old card to the new card is to use a computer. Don't bother plugging your phone into your computer, that is a waste of time. Android will not let you manually browse the content of your phone's SD card when it is plugged in. Instead, your computer will see your phone as a media device.

So, what you first need to do is find a computer that has a built-in memory card reader. You can buy a memory card reader if you don't have one. Turn off your phone and take out the old memory card first. Put the old memory card in the computer, create a folder on the desktop called "old memory card," and copy everything in the old card to that new folder. Properly eject the memory card and put the new one in the PC. Open it up and open the folder on your desktop called "old memory card." Copy everything in that folder, as-is, to your new memory card. That's it. You shouldn't have to worry about transferring anything over so long as you follow those instructions. You can use your phone to copy content over but it will be a pain. The whole process will literally take 3 minutes if you use a PC.

Sounds easy enough. The MicroSD card actually came with a SD Adapter for it. Is that what you mean by a memory card reader?

Well maybe not so easy. I'm copying now and have 13,804 items with 10.2 GB on "old memory card". Had 1 error and chose to skip that file. Still copying.....could be reader on my work desktop pc not working properly so I will probably take home and do it from my laptop. Thank again for your help.

it would be even faster if you had this utility on your PC.

* TeraCopy for Microsoft Windows - Code Sector

TeraCopy is blazingly fast compared to the Windows file copy manager.

It also does not get hung up when it hits a bad file. It just keeps going, and when it is thru, it will display a list of corrupt files. Offers you a chance to fix the file, retry, or skip it.

I was just coming back here to post that I've tried to copy the sd card 3 times now; it's just sitting at 5% and has a file name of 22871040-http+i+imwx+com+mobile......etc. I think this file in in the "android" folder because that's the last folder copied so far. How long do I wait for this to continue? I'm not sure that its doing anything at this point

Sounds like I might have to try TeraCopy for Microsoft Windows.

I meant having an actual memory card reader, not the adapter. The reader is the device you plug the memory card into. I wasn't sure if you had a PC with one built-in or not. Most modern computers do but some of the less expensive models don't. It's good that you kept the adapter though as most memory card readers in computers only support the full-sized SDHC and SDXC cards, not the microSDHC and microSDXC cards. I have a Surface Pro 2 that has a microSDXC card reader built-in but my fiance's Lenovo Yoga 2 has a full-sized SDXC reader built-in.

As for your other problem, you can try using your home computer and sticking with the general Windows File Explorer (i.e. when you click on My Computer and open up the memory card) or you can try a copying program like what AZ suggested. Your corrupted file could actually be corrupted or it could be an issue with your computer's memory card reader. It isn't uncommon for older memory cards to become corrupted over time, especially older ones.

I have yet to copy the entire "old memory card" so it seems this isn't so easy. My bad for jinxing myself.

I installed TeraCopy and it doesn't finish. It doesn't get to the point to display a list of corrupt files for me to fix the file, retry or skip it. So far out of the 12967 files/840 folders 10.2GB on the old memory card only 4161 files/580 folders and 3.59GB have copied. I started it over at least 3 times now. How do I get this task completed?

Try using a different computer. You may want to run an analysis tool to determine if the old memory card is corrupted. Windows can do this are there are a bunch of 3rd party tools. Just know that if the memory card has become corrupted, there isn't anything you can do. There isn't going to be a magical "data recovery" program you can run.

That couldn't be more wrong. Either you do not know what you are doing, or have the parameters of your phone set up wrong. Any Android phone I've ever had, and that is 5 different ones with SD cards, you can plug the phone into your computer with USB and you get 2 new drives - one for phone contents and one for SD Card contents. You can browse through your SD Card with windows file manager in windows while hooked up to your phone.

Then enlighten me and tell me what I am doing wrong. I can plug my S5 into my PC and it is seen as a media device. I can sync media to the SD card in my phone but I can't actually browse the entire SD card through the standard File Explorer. Furthermore, Google has disabled UMS support in Android 4.4 for SD cards meaning that MTP and PTP are only used for file transfers. So how is one to supposed to copy all of the contents off of a memory card (and not just media) by plugging their phone into their computer via USB? I can change every USB option that pops up with my S5 and I still can't manually browse the SD card, through my computer and a USB connection, unless I actually remove the memory card from my phone.

I'm able to browse my SD card when my phone is plugged in to my computer. I do it all the time. The only time it won't let me access my card is when the phone locks.

I am doing it right now. I don't know what your issue is.

Maybe, if you would be nice, you can post the settings you are enabling on your phone after you plug it into your computer. That way it is cleared up instead of me detailing what I'm doing and you coming back saying "you're wrong" without any further explanation. It would be nice to know what you are doing so I can stop falsely advising people.

Is it showing up as a separate drive on your computer or as a media player?

It shows up as a separate drive on my computer. when i connect my phone to the computer , a pop up window will come up. click on open device to view files. after that the card and phone files will show up. i just click on the card and move everything i need to move. i hope i explained it clearly . i suck at giving directions . lol

I finally was able to get to a computer and try and finish this task. I plugged in the phone to the computer and clicked on my computer then Samsung-SM-G900V and am given two options: 1) Card or 2) Phone. However, when I try and copy what is on the card to my computer a window pops up saying "calculating the time required to copy the files" and then another window shows up "data supplied of wrong type". It did copy a few of the folders but not near everything. Also you cannot copy using TeraCopy at all....I tried to drag the files to TeraCopy it does not allow you do so. Has anyone had luck with this? What do I actually need to keep on this old sd card?
