Kind of off topic a little bit but I'm a tbolt user and my girlfriend is heading to Ireland for an internship and we are looking for a cell phone solution for her that will most closely duplicate the service we get here in the US. She currently has ATT here in the states and is looking for a cell phone/plan or something that she can take with her over there that will not cost an absolute insane amount of money.

Does Verizon offer any sort of international services that we could get for her now and she could just take with her to use for the 5 months she is there? I sincerely appreciate any direction you all can point me in. Thanks a ton!!

Both of you could buy calling cards and it'd probably be way, way cheaper.

There isn't an international plan that is inexpensive. Use Skype on your phone or laptops. And prepaid calling cards like Frank suggested

get an unlocked phone, i know Verizon will unlock phones under certain conditions, they unlocked several for me before. I believe att will do it too. You would probably need a quad band.

While this topic is up, does the tbolt go international? Can it in anyway go interntional? I know wifi will def work anywhere also right .. I know stupid question

Get an unlocked GSM World Phone. Buy a SIM either on-line here or once she's in Ireland Using Cell Phones Overseas | www.clarkhoward.com

Most of Europe is on GSM, not CDMA.

Any U.S. phones, use them on WiFi only for Skype and e-mail, or just leave them locked up here at home.

We had a guy at work take his laptop on a cruise ship so he could keep up with e-mail. He failed to check the roaming rates ($20 per MB) and failed to tell anybody in advance. We now have new policies about laptops and blackberries.

Pay-as-you-go's are easy to get in Ireland; cheap as heck too. I had Meteor there and liked it. O2 seems to be pretty big there too.

Basically, you can just buy a sim-card, and use whatever GSM un-locked phone you want (Provided the GSM frequencies are the same...)

With the pre-paid, you can just use calling cards or Skype To Go (Dial a local number, but it can place international calls with your Skype-out credit). You can either get unlimited europe for $8.99/month, or it is like $0.018/minute to dial an Ireland number (cheaper than Verizon, see below). Skype To Go can also dial Skype-to-Skype too.

If you are looking for an all-inclusive Verizon deal for you (Being the one to stay in America): You could also look into International Long Distance Value Plan. It is 3.99 a month for your phone, but only charges you $0.07 a minute for landline calls to Ireland, and $0.19 a minute for landline calls to Ireland. Defiantly cheaper than $1.49 a minute for landline / $1.69 a minute for mobile without it!
