I'm traveling from the u.s. to Paris for 5 days. what is the best way to get international phone service on my pixel 2 in Paris? My current phone service does not extend service to Paris.

Welcome.

You could grab a local SIM when you get to the airport in France, I do not know what the cost would be.

You could also sign up for Project Fi, $20 for a month of service plus $10 per GB for any data you use (even internationally, billed down to the MB). Voice calls to the US appear to also be free, so using Fi in France seems to be absolutely no different than using it in the US. For your own sanity, check that claim yourself before signing up.

If you think you'll use Fi for longer than that trip, I can give you my referral code which gives me a $20 credit and is essentially a buy one get one free for your base plan for the first 2 months (must maintain service for 2 months, your first month gets a $20 credit).

And Fi uses your eSIM, so you don't even have to remove your current SIM.

We are going to the UK, France, and Belgium in July/August - we're going to sign up for Fi on our Pixel 2s for the time we're there.

PM sent. I suggest you look into the group plan, the data usage tiers are different, and the second line is $15/month.

The referral code I sent is good for as many lines as you need to sign up, but it may not qualify for the second line on the group plan. Hint - you'll save more money by using the referral code twice, once for each line, as both lines will then get a $20 credit. If you're going to keep it long-term, do the group plan...

I interrogated the Google customer service agent because I couldn't believe how good a deal it was. I am heading back to Kenya in a couple days. Last time, when I didn't have a Pixel, I paid AT&T $60 just to have the privilege of texting, like 250MB of data, and calls that cost over $1 a minute. That's was the lowest plan.

With Fi, I can sign up for one month and the most I'll pay is $80 for data. Calls are still 20c/min in that region but that's a fraction of what AT&T costs.

Can't speak to performance yet. I think I will be so excited I can even use it that the speed won't matter. WiFi in central Africa generally sucks so how much worse can it be?

That seems expensive to me, but I guess it depends on where you’re going.
In the Philippines, using a local sim, I pay around $1.50 a week. That gives me 2gb data and unlimited text to all networks locally. I use viber and/or fb msgr to contact anyone in the US if I need to.

They have international texting plans and calling plans also of course and also local calling plans. Most areas here now have reasonably fast data speeds
