and Hello,

A little about me. I'm more experienced (in terms of years) than most. I've been into "tech" since the 60s. Done a bunch of prgramming from mainframe stuff (yeech) through windows programming (moderate yeech). Been running linux on my desktop/network since....about 2003 (yay!). Really haven't needed to do much more than scripting for linux. Seems that the tools are mostly already there.

Two years ago, I decided to get an iphone (no shame). After a year and a half, I couldn't wait for the contract to expire so that I could replace it, and I did with a Galaxy S III. I broke into the iphone because I just couldn't stand it any more. Now I'm looking at the droid phone, and am not seeing reasons to root/rom it. I'm sure the info is out there, so could someone please point me to a place where I can find a list of things that I can do with a rooted SIII that I can't do stock? Hey, seriously, I've only been able to figure out that "rooting is cool" and "wow, you'll be able to do so much stuff that you can't do now" but not specifics. Please, just a link is all that I need.

I'm anxious to get started programming the phone. Had problems getting eclipse set up on my linux box, but that problem isn't for here.

Thank you all,

Welcome to AC!!

I just googled "why root android phone" and came up with these two links. I'm sure there are more out there. If you want to get more answers as to why people have specifically rooted their phone, I suggest you pose that question in the General Help and How To forum. This is the Introduction forum, and, you will get more replies there.

"With root access, you can disable the bloatware that comes with your phone, manually deny app permissions, run a firewall, access the entire file system, or tether your device, even if tethering functionality has been disabled. You’ll find many apps that require root access in the Google Play store (formerly known as the Android Market), although they won’t function until you root your device."

"In this article, we’ll first discover how to root your Android with an application called SuperOneClick. Then we’ll discover 15 apps that take advantage of rooting."
