iPhone to Atrix

I know this might be a biased place to get this information, but a friend has offered to trade an iPhone 4 for an Atrix straight up trade. Is this something I should take? Are they of equal value?

The number one thing you want to check for, with an Atrix, is that when you call with the Atrix, the person at the other end of the call can understand your voice. There is a certain percentage of Atrixes, out there, with defective voice, and Motorola seems to be unable to fix that defect.

So, before you make a trade for that Atrix, call a bunch of people, and ask them if they can recognize your voice and understand what you are saying, without your having to yell into the phone.

Thanks for the advice. I wouldn't have known that. I will make sure that my buddy calls a couple of people just to make sure for me. Other than that though, you would make the trade?

What size iP4 do you have? I see Atrix's going for $400-ish on craigslist. If you have a 16gb I would probably do it. 32gb, not so much.

I've had the atrix for three days and I'm having the voice problem. Can I exchange it at my local store for a new one?

Yes, return it for another. The next one may also be defective. Keep returning them until you get one with a clear voice function.

How noticeable is the degraded voice quality? Slightly muffled or almost unable to be understood?

Based upon more than 500 posts in the thread running over on Motorola corporate, there is a range of response by the affected Atrix owners. Some report slightly muffled, while others cannot use the voice function at all.

In my own case, when I first bought my Atrix, voice transmission was clear as could be. Towards the end of the 30 day buyers remorse, I began to get requests to repeat myself. I didn't realize what was coming(fool I was!). Then, it got much worse to the point where I was yelling into the phone, and still had to repeat myself. It was embarrassing. I can no longer be heard at all....just a noise. Now, for calls, I use my little freebie Samsung flip phone on my personal line(the Atrix is mostly for business).

I would have sent back the Atrix to Motorola for a repair, but each Atrix owner who has posted about their repair experience for the muffled voice said that, the "repaired" phone was either the same, or worse. So, I don't see the point of being without device, only to get it back the same way as I sent it.

I've tried all the gimmicks and workarounds. No go.

I plan to replace the Atrix with a Nexus S on ATT bands, when Samsung finally releases it.

Todays your lucky day.....

Thanks, but these Negri phones have been out for a while. Their origin is unclear, and some of them are open box. Samsung has not actually released the phone. There is a placeholder on the Samsung site, but that is all.

I'm not gonna lay down that kind of $$ for a phone with no legit release by the manufacturer. Also, I want to try out the actual model in a brick-and-mortar retailer before I buy.

Wise choice. I know you've said you've had some terrible voice quality issues, so I am sure you are anxious. But if you can get by with the second (old school) flip phone until Samsung officially releases this that would be best.

You wouldn't consider trying to return the atrix to Motorola (I know you are without a handset for a time period, and there is no guarantee the next handset will be an improvement on voice quality), but just seems a shame that motorola can't get their act together on the voice issues on this phone since the rest of the phone seems to be stellar in my opionion.

I agree.

To be sure, Atrix is a stellar device. Every device has it's imperfections, but at the very least, it has to function as a telephone.

What is so irritating to those of us with the muffled voice affliction is that Motorola refuses to acknowledge that there is anything wrong. So, since this is not an official defect, if you decide to send the phone back to Motorola for a repair, you have to pay the shipping expenses! Not a chance that, after this nuisance and paying the initial release price($200), I will suffer the additional offense of paying to have Motorola ship me back another equally defective Atrix.

I, personally, believe that Motorola refuses to accept responsibility for this defect because they know there is a large number of devices which are affected, and they don't want to foot the bill for replacing/repairing them. After all, Motorola Mobility has only just been spun off, and perhaps their development and pre-production expenses for the Atrix were over budget.

Couldn't agree more. It's initial function and true test of quality is it's ability to function as a phone. I think we should still hold out hope as in recent years other products and manufacturers have been through this and eventually caved (remember the RROD issue on Xbox? Microsoft wouldn't admit the issue for some time).

Motorola put "all their chips" on the Atrix. The hardware will support OS updates through the agreed upon 18 months, so hopefully they will rectify the voice issue sooner rather than later. I'm sure users like you are fed up at this point.
