IR Blaster [headphone jack]

I'm planning on making an ir blaster with the help of an article I found online but I not only want it to transmit or signals but receive so that I will be able to provide the exact frequency for each button on my Toshiba power TV remote! I suddenly got a crazy idea- I thought if I can transmit it signals through the headphone wires why can't I record signals by attaching a receiver led to the microphone wire on the earphone????!!!!! What do u think can any1 try this out or at least help me in some way??! Please!
