Is changing the notification LEDs a native setting?

New Android user as well as new new forums member here. Love my Droid and I've had a lot of fun playing with the widgets, obsessing over Angry Birds, and installing awesome apps, but one thing bugs me - LED colors.

I've searched the forums and there are a lot of posts about downloading apps to let you change every imaginable LED notification color, but a coworker of mine told me the ability to change the LEDs is a native phone setting. However, I can't seem to find it and I'm feeling REALLY stupid.

Help a new brother out, guys and gals? Can I really change the LED colors without a third party app or do I gotta download one?

Nothing native, but yes, apps like Handcent and ChompSMS have the ability to alter Message notification LED colors and flash speed. Missed Call has the ability to alter the LED color when (go figure) you have a missed call, as well as SMS, Bluetooth, Calendar, Airplane Mode, Low Battery, etc.
