Is Charging to 100% Really That Bad?

Android Central Question

Just got a Galaxy Note 9, intending to keep the device for a while (2+ years). I've heard that not charging the phone overnight and only charging to 80% (or some other number) will increase the battery's longevity. Is this true, and if so, is it worth the hassle?

Also, Samsung says the Note 9 will retain 95% of the battery after 2 years. Is this legit? If so, how?

Personally I prevent my battery from dying, and although I don't leave it plugged in over night I do charge to 100%.

I worked at Verizon for 4 years, I saw first hand being plugged in 24/7 the displays took bad battery damage, some of our phones swelled and split open in under a year.

You will notice as the phone is charging it gets warm / hot, when it reaches about 90% it starts to cool down as the charging current is reduced, when it reaches 100% the phone stops charging and after a short while the phone is cold, it is no longer charging. This is how the charging circuits in the phone work, so it is safe to charge to 100% overnight. The only danger is if the charging circuit failed and the phone continued to charge beyond 100% but this would be very unlikely.

I prefer to charge my phone in the evening to 100% before going to bed then unplug it, it only drops by 3% overnight and then will last all day.
