Is Cyanogenmod faster/snappier than stock Nexus S 4G build?

I'm thinking of getting cyanogenmod 9 when it's done and I'm curious about how the previous build was compared to stock Nexus S 4G? Anyone have it on?

Yes definitely faster in my opinion because they go in and tweak everything to be as efficient as possible... Plus you get all the CM goodies that stock doesn't have. Probably the only downside to CM builds is battery life always seems to suffer with the packaged kernel but if your rooting to install CM then a better and more efficient kernel is only a download and flash away :)

where would I find such a kernel? And also how would I install it? thanks!

Find them pretty much the same way as ROMs and install them the same way through CWM etc.

CM7 is much, much more responsive and snappy than the stock Gingerbread.

CM7 is faster than stock, but it's not the fastest.
If you want straight speed with less bells and whistles you want Bugless Beast by Peter.
I don't believe he's got an ICS ROM for the NS4G, at least not that I have seen.

If you want a fairly good ICS Rom right now for the NS4G...I suggest aosp's. It's stable enough for a daily driver, at least it is in my opinion, and i would even say that when compared to stock GB on the NS4G it's faster. One could probably argue that though.

Also, has anyone been able to get the stock Car Home working on ICS? I haven't seen any ROM where it works and extracting the APK and installing manually doesn't seem to even display the icon to open.

I think stock with the right kernel (Matr1x v11.5) is faster and smoother than CM7.

Completely false...don't let anyone tell you that. There is no ICS rom faster than stock gb. I've been running aosp's for about 2 weeks. It's not faster in the least....

You can't say completely false as there are many user aspects that can make or break your experience.
I've been running the rom since he first dropped it. First few versions were laggy and slow, this is a wip/alpha project...so its expected to not be fully optimized as of yet.
Now...version 26 is out and I say its as fast if not faster than stock gb.
Im running franco 9dec build with stock voltage live oc at 110/880 on lazy with deep idle off. After every reboot I change the dev option of background processes to no more than 4 as for some reason this preference doesn't stick after a power cycle and I think this version is just a speed demon power house of sorts. I couldn't be happier right now with this build. So unless you've done actual scientific tests on roms and the sort there is no way for you to claim the info is false :p. Or that its true for that matter. But thats why there is a phrase: your mileage may vary. Because it does ;)

I am running CM7, but only cause I like the ICS theme (a really dumb reason).

I've also got CM7 w/ the matr1x kernel running on my Nexus & I've been noticing stability issues. Phone will not wake up from sleep like every other day & sometimes the screen will freeze up & become unresponsive, forcing me to pull the battery. Was wondering if there was a particular cpu governor setup I should use, it's currently on ondemand 800/1000. changed it from the 200/1000 default after the problema but it didn't seem to make a difference.

I had same setup, ran perfect for a long time and then started same actions, I was up to Matrix 11.0 or.5, can't remember. I actually had no problems on earlier Matrix kernels, but decided to take the jump and go to ICS while flashing. Really enjoy it, a few little bugs, slightly slower but no biggee, the release will fix that.
Try both Koush and AOSP's latest versions. Both have kernels built it, so I have stayed with them rather than change all over, just to prevent any problems
I can cause then have to fix!!
No freezes, reboots, haven't touched the battery since then

You do realize the extra work you subject yourself to JUST to match the speeds of GB out of the box, right?

You dont need "Scientific tests" to know that on average stock GB is still faster/snappier than any of these ICS roms. I'm not saying these ROMS are bad...I understand that these are still alpha projects. All I'm saying is they are not as snappy.

YOUR device may be...but on average that isnt the case.

This right here. I love Cyanogenmod, but the longer I run it the more unstable it gets. Then I tried Bugless Beast and haven't looked back. Probably the thing I miss the most between the two is the status bar short cuts, but that's it.

You can find those in the theme section for the nexus s at xda.

The only extra work was flashing the stuff. I underclocked my phone so no need to "match" the speed :p.

Have you updated the kernel? It's working great for me, although I have moved onto AOSP's ICS Rom.
