Is Froyo 2.2 worth it? I'm seeing too many posts with problems.

I am hesitating doing this upgrade because of all the issues I see cropping up.

Coming from the BB Storm where I had HUGE problems with up upgrades I am not sure I am willing to get into a firestorm with 2.2 and deal with hours of headaches if it doesn't go smoothly.

What do you think?

As long as updates exist, there will be problems with them. Most often, it's related to third party apps that don't play well with the new apps. Sometimes, data can also become corrupted from a backup/restoration during the upgrade process. Having said that, the last time I looked at the poll in this section of the forum, 90% of the users were happy with Froyo. Personally, I have no issues at all. The people who have problems will always dominate the forum threads as this is where they come to seek solutions. Unfortunately, that can give the impression that a lot of people are unhappy.

It seems the results from upgrades are all over the place. The instructions in the sticky certainly seem to help/fix a lot of the issues. I certainly do not think the upgrades are as bad as some of the BB/Storm issues.

it is worth it. but it is undeniably one of the worst OTAs i have seen.

i'd put it on par with the storm leaks as far as QA is concerned.

The problems with 2.2 are not as widespread as these forums would have you believe. There was a poll a few weeks ago that showed 60% of X owners had no problem whatsoever, with another 30% reporting either minor bugs that were not a problem or things were fixed after they reset and undid whatever damage they had done in the first place. People that don't have problems simply aren't going to post. Don't worry about 2.2 and just upgrade already.

If you are that guy that always has a problem then worry. I am not, so I didn't and the upgrade was perfect.

Upgrade went perfect with mine. The one thing I always hated about Blackberry was that whenever you did an upgrade, it would wipe out all of the apps and their purchase registrations.

Did not have this problem with Android after update on the X. All Apps were there and worked great, without having to worry about entering the reg code again inside the trial period.

I have a non-rooted phone and the update to 2.2 went flawlessly. I think what people are seeing here is a vocal minority, and to put it into perspective, that minority is further decreased when you consider many of the people who had problems have rooted their phones.

While its clear that some people who did not root their phones, still had problems, I'm not convinced that is an overly extensive problem,i.e., its safe to upgrade.

There is absolutely no reason not to execute the upgrade; sweat if you're boot-strapped, rooted or pre-released. Otherwise, don't believe the unwarranted griping. Do yourself a favor and factory reset prior to the upgrade. Also see the sticky at the top of this forum for specific instructions. This is not X specific, its just good practice for any OS upgrade of this magnitude.

That's solid practice for any major OS upgrade on any complex device. What about it? Every single OS and OS update has bugs, and this version is no different.

Further, Moto working on a fix for the SMS issue (or similar issues) doesn't invalidate it's viability as an extremely welcome and valuable upgrade. The majority of devices (and especially those who who were not user modded) have had few issues with 2.2.

Do you make a habit of a) stating the obvious (software has bugs) and b) being a condescending donkey?

I mean, gee, it must have taken some real detective work to get to the bottom of the mystery of software having bugs. And it's a real scoop that the company has actually (gasp) acknowledged it.

The fact is that 2.2 is fine for most people. Most people are NOT the people who post on boards like this. The people who post here are enthusiasts with a deeper interest in their phones. Most people don't give a rat's patootie about all that. And most people who had plain stock 2.1 had zero issues with the upgrade and are like myself, not having any significant issues.

I guess haters gotta hate or something, because some of the most clueless comments come from people who clearly can't find their rear ends with both hands much less comment on technology.

Most issues with 2.2 happen to people have tinkered with their phones in some way. People who started with 2.1, most likely are having a satisfactory 2.2 experience.

So perhaps YOU missed a memo or something.

I was bored today and finally flashed from the leaked Froyo build to 2.1, and then a clean slate (even the SD card) to OTA 2.2.

So far so good, everything feels more consistent with its smoothness and transition speed.

My 2.3.15 OTA totally messed up my unrooted DX
I do realize that there are many causes for this, most likely a single app that was not up to code for it.

That being said... I was able to finally get past the "X" and wipe all including the card, then revert to a totally clean install.

I found that while 2.3.15 looked amazing in Quadrant, yet felt very laggy compared to 2.1 IMHO

I returned that device and now have mine with 2.1. I want to keep it there until they fix these issues. Only problem is... I can find no way to disable the OTA. I spoke to a Verizon rep... they said I will receive a message asking if I want to upgrade. Choices are: Yes, Ask later, and Cancel.
If I am in standby and don't see this message it takes that as a YES and downloads. They actually suggested that I keep my phone off... Humm...

Anyway.I plan to root, and trust the DEV community more than Verizon or MOTO. I learned with the Storm 1 that ALL may abandon you... EXCEPT the DEV/Hack community. They were the only support on the friggin' piece of crap they called the Storm

I simply did the OTA update on the day it was released. No factory reset, no formatting the SD card, and most importantly, no problems since then. I'm fortunate that I'm not seeing the bugs that are reported here. I still wish my battery life was better, but other than that I'm a happy camper.

I say go for it.

I didn't have problems with the OTA update when it first came out, other than battery life not being as good for me as it was with the leaked 2.2. Even though I didn't have problems, I did a factory reset anyway (did not reformat SD card) to see if it would help with battery life. It did. Battery life is much better now, and I still don't have problems with the OTA update.
