With the HTC negotiations, is Google planning on going the way of Apple - manufacture the only phone (Pixel) to run on the Android platform? Seems to be many issues with the fragmentation of all the different phone manufactures to provide timely updates and be on the latest OS.

While the fragmentation is a real, and significant, issue I didn't evaluate the HTC deal in the same way you did. If Google tries to become the only Android OEM there will be a lot of people left out as a significant user base for Android is on Samsung devices.

Google would literally destroy Android if they did, Google and HTC phones are a tiny sliver of all Android devices sold.

If they did, they wouldn't be able to manufacture nearly enough phones, they couldn't replace Samsung, Huawei, LG, and others.

Many peple also dislike stock Android, it's so feature stripped that if I was forced between a pixel and an iPhone, I would probably get the iPhone.
