Is it possible/safe to rename nandroids?

Yeah, it will mess up the md5 depending on the recovery youre using. I name them only thru rom manager.

Not sure if you can rename them on amon_ra without getting md5 error.

Is that true with CW Recovery or is that a different kind of backup? If so, I apologize for my incorrect answer! That's what I've always used and I thought those were Nandroid backups :/

It may be that you can rename them on CW (yeah its a real nandroid backup) without problems, but you cant on amon_ra?

Or maybe its just rolling the dice when renaming them period? All i know is ive renamed em before with astro and got md5 errors, so i havent done it since.

I use amon ra & I rename mine with astro without md5 errors. I don't delete anything, just add to what is already there.

I do believe I read something like this before (can't remember where) and from what I remember is you can't have any spaces when naming it.

Mine would look something like
BCDAS-(date of backup)-(4 digit #)-vaelpak-v30-vptheme

Lol yeah its long but it works:)

I have been renaming my RA nandroid files after saving them to my PC. To test one of the renamed files tonight, I moved it from my PC to the SD card (copied with the modified name) and restored it without issue. Like the prior poster, I read about people having issues restoring nandroids with blanks in the file name, so I always user an underscore when modifying the file name.

I renamed a nandroid in root explorer. How would I find it in ra and restore. Also if I do a full wipe and flash a new rom do I still have those backups that I can use?

Boot into recovery, hit nandroid> restore and select your backup.
They well still be there after a wipe because they are on your sd card that isn't touched during a wipe.

I tried that ,and there is only one thing in there. Its a bunch of letters but nothing that I renamed or that looks familiar

The numbers and letters you see is the device-id. When you click on that you should see your backups.

Just to make sure you took the right route (not saying you didn't)
Backup/restore
Nand restore
group of numbers and letters (This is the DEVICE-ID, this will be in yellow in the upper part of the screen)
now you should see your back ups

For some reason you shouldn't see them, make sure you have them in your nandroid folder on your sd card

Hope I helped

That was it. I just didn't go the one step farther. What is the easiest way to rename those. I did it in root explorer but the renaming didn't seem to show up.

I had to go in root explorer and change the permissions in order for the name change to stick.I went back in ra and the name change was there.

Glad I could help. :)

I just use Astro File Manager. It is an easy way for me. The only time I use root explorer is when I need to go deeper than what Astro will let me go, but that isn't very often.

Now how I do it from Astro is just push and hold the backup, options will pop-up, edit, rename. Then I just tap it and add the info, then I tap ok or accept. (can't remember how it is actually worded)

I'm sure it should be about the same with root explorer.
Another option is to copy it to your computer and rename it there. Just make sure you put it back in the correct folder.:)

Hope this helped. If you are still having trouble, just list what you are exactly doing so we can have more of an idea of what is happening.

Just downloaded astro. It is much easier to rename. It seems like each program has its strong points.
