Is it possible to disable sound notifications from hangouts only for chat message?

I cannot find any way to disable sound notifications, or all notifications relating to chat messages. I'd like to get notifications from hangouts when I get an SMS message.
If I disable notifications in Hangouts->settings for my account all chat and sms notifications are ignored, yet I've enabled notifications under SMS setting in hangouts.

Welcome to the forums. If you hit menu>People and options, there is a check box for Notifications. You would have to uncheck each Hangout you don't want alerts from.
