Google is Google and Apple is Apple. Google is trying to have their own line of hardware, yes, but they are still giving Android to other manufacturers. It's good they are now having their own line of phones, since it will have faster and more updates than other Droids out there, like the Nexus line, but now Google is having the control of everything in the Pixel line. I still think they could have started with a lower price tho, Apple is way more recognized for their hardware than Google, and a lot of people (here in Chile at least) think of Google as just software (mainly Google search), and that's all.

Unlike Apple - the phone doesn't go to crap once you download an update to the OS. I've been able to make it two years without significant performance issues on my Nexus 6.
