Is my nexus 4 rooted?

My "Google/LG Nexus 4" Unlocked smartphone has Android Version 4.3 and Build number JWR66Y.

I believe it may be Rooted, because I can see the "/ Device" folder, which includes subfolders such as, acct, cache, config, ... , system, and vendor -- using "ES File Explorer".

BUT, I could not confirm if it is Rooted with "Android Terminal Emulator" on my phone. It initially showed the "$" prompt, which I understand may mean my phone is Not Rooted. I also understood that if I entered "su" (without the quotes), and the prompt changed to "#", my phone is Rooted; however, the "su" command was not recognised. Same results using "ConnectBot".

I want to have my phone Rooted, so that I can backup everything on my phone using "Titanium Backup".
This is my first Smartphone, so I am a Newbie for Android, Rooting, and Backing Up. I have over 50 years experience using and loving computers (excluding Apple products).
Thanks (in advance) for your help.

Thank you for your help, EvilMonkey. I installed the app on my phone, which you recommended. When I opened it, the following message appeared:

"There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem!
If you just upgraded to Android 4.3, you need to manually re-root - consult the relevant forums for your device!
"

Am I correct in assuming that this indicates that my phone is Not Rooted?
My phone was upgraded to Android 4.3 in June 2013.

Some file explorers will let you see into system partition etc but wont let you change anything. If you do want root it is a very simple process. If you have a custom recovery already installed, all you have to do is go into it and flash the supersu zip. If you have no custom recovery then you will probably need to download the drivers and fastboot flash a custom recovery and then flash the supersu zip.

I know the exact problem because today I was in the same position. What you need to do is download an updated version of
superSU on your computer and store it in your phones SD card. Then put your phone into recovery mode and flash the downloaded file. After that start the app, if it doesn't still work click on busy box and then superSU.

all you need to do to check root is go to /system/xbin/ folder and see if there is a file named "su" and also check if there is a file named superuser.apk on system folder

In order for the phone to be "rooted" SU needs to be properly installed so it can download and install the need binary files.

When I rooted my phone with a root toolkit, my SU didn't install properly. All I had to do was to flash an updated version. Zip file through recovery mode.
